Hi James, surely changing the thermostat is the best place to start.

Is there any possibility it has that waterless coolant stuff in it?
I don’t know much at all about it to pass much comment but just something I thought of. Other than that sounds like the thermostat as you mentioned. Have you tried bleeding it just to be sure too? KEEP CALM AND Drill ON 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

It's not running Evans waterless, it's running colder by 50% too. Waterless drops it 10~15%?
Thermostat is my thinking as I just can't get my head around why it won't get up to temperature unless it's been overcooled and thermostat is the only failure I can think of that would cause this. If gauge was reading low and engine was too hot then it would smell hot and measure hot on thermometer. If coolant pump had gone or air lock it would be too hot and I wouldn't see the drop in temp on gauge once it Had been worked. Nor would I see stat working and heat change across the rad. Same for a partial obstruction in cooling system. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Sounds like failed thermostat (open position), or no thermostat fitted to me.

Just picking brains and i concur, But rad is cold until shes worked hard to temp, then rad is hot at top, cool at bottom. I am confident it's in there. Just not working correctly?
IS there any other reason why she would run cold? Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Semi faulty water pump? Some of them aren’t great quality, seen el-cheapos with plastic impellers that get loose when warm- real head scratcher that
I always find the infa-red thermometers are great for these kind of faults and are very cheap on amazon and the like- great tool for the box- and it’s got “a fricken lazer beam man” |

have been using the infa red thermometer to test to date.
if impellers were the problem i would have slower coolant flow and then hot spots i would of thought, it doesnt seem to do this. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |
