The BBC did a documentary series in 1991 called 'The Power and the Glory'. I'm not sure if anyone remembers it (if you are old enough?) It covered motor sport in general from its beginnings to, what was then, cutting edge F1. I think it was about 13 programmes and I did have a VHS until I got savage and took all my tapes to the tip. If you like your motorsport and manage to find it on Youtube, it is very interesting and explains how F1 evolved.

I think it is really difficult to compare a driver from, say the sixties, to Lewis or any of todays F1 drivers. In the same way we look at our juniors (again if your old enough) and say 'It wasn't like that in my day'.

There have been great comments and opinions ( Whistle ) on this thread and I think it is horses for courses. I'm sure Lewis would struggle with the (lack of) handling of an ERA, or a pre-war Mercedes whereas the drivers of that era would probably quake just looking at a F1 steering wheel. I would.

Grenadier's comment on being as good as Stirling Moss was a classic! I must remember that for future use.

If I may put my hat in the ring, I think the greatest motor racing driver of all time is the late, great John Surtees. This is the man who won both motorcycle and F1 world championships. I don't think that is a record that will ever be beaten.

I was lucky enough to witness Senna at Donington. Arguably the greatest F1 lap of all time.

I was lucky enough to have lunch with Surtees at Goodwood FOS. Lovely, lovely chap and, as you say, a genuine talent. And with regard to being a champion on four and two wheels, I'm as good a motorcycle rider as all-round nice guy, Guy Martin, as I too have won no TTs (or is it because I've also come off my bike in various high-sides Whistle ) Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

I did mad sunday a couple of times and it was then I worked out as I wasn't as quick as perhaps I thought. I was undertaken on the mountain section whist doing around 130mph Shocked Very Happy

I trundled back to douglas, parked the bike up and went for a pint Laughing

Anyone who's completed there is the proper definiton of a legend or a lunatic....its a fine line!! Cool Laughing

Real drivers were the ones who were great at anything.
Look at Moss and Fangio, Mille Miglia, F1, Rally, etc..
They were the great drivers. They could handle any vehicle in any condition.
