thats quite a slating for the X-Brake you have there, maybe if you found it 'not that effective' yours wasnt fitted or adjusted correctly. they are after all calipers designed for earth moving plant so should be more than butch enough for the application on a mere fully loaded 110 and 3.5T trailer.

i have had one for two nearly 3 years on my challenge truck.

the vehicle is used alot off road for driving days (i escort people around routes) plus comps (but less of them now days) i find the brake superb, it always works never gets filled with gunk (unlike the old drum brake i removed that was useless after an off roading session in bog/water/sloppy mud conditons as it filled up) and is fasr more efficient than any i have had on a stock defender and that includes all the new work 110s/90s and my own 4 defenders.

i cant rate them highly enough.

i agree there has been some offroad damage reported with the use of them - three i have heard of; a case of people trying to winch fwd with the handbrake on whilst revving hard and another 2 incidents of people landing on top of a rocky mounds, all i believe resulting in bent discs and IIRC these were on ones without the now fitted guard at the bottom on the back plate. the brake still didnt fail! Cheers

Sonic, i have had to reread that line a few times to try and understand whats meant.

i think mse means the handbrake only, ie how many defenders use x brakes and how many use drum brakes for handbrakes and how many problems do you here of for both types, speculating that there are more Defenders with drum handbrakes than X brakes and you dont hear of that many problems.

slightly odd as if that were the case why would there have been a need for a disc handbrake?

i didnt know the x brake had been out 40 years either otherwise that would be slightly unfair comparison.

not sure where the dangerous bit comes from, as most would agree disc brakes are far better than drum brakes Cheers

I think there have been some interesting comments by all.

I think, however, for everyone here who has heard of a drum brake failing there are many that havent. None of mine has. And drum brakes remember have been around for many years and still are.

But then - here is an interesting comment: how many of you service and check your drum brake? either as part of the weekly/monthly checks or a service. It is part of the braking and drive line systems. If you neglect something its bound to develop issues!

All the comments surrounding warranties and legal issues arent one to be repeated as we have all said, but removing the thought of rolling, just any general failure or issue attributed to that would land you in the stick - and it isnt hard. No amount of evidence of use or longevity or even the company is going to help if you are in the dock

i said at the begining each to their own - there is still no way i would buy one, why mess with something that will work fine Mike

I think your last comment is the issue.

I have had my hand brake back to the dealer so often it is ridiculous, they just don't seem to be adjust them to work when the drive train is hot and then subsequently when it cools off.

The result is that the drum doesn't work.

As to the comment earlier about LR not honouring the downstream components under warranty that is something I hadn't thought of, although they claim the load goes the other way, i.e. the load is on the transfer box when the brake binds, rather than the rear diffs.
With this in mind I might stick with the standard until the end of three years and wave it goodbye on the anniversary.

Some people have problems with the brake drum - but not all and certainly on none of my other land rovers with drum brakes Mike

The only reason we have a drum brake is down to cost and not wanting to change tooling etc Thumbs Up disc brakes always work and are self adjusting and only need pads changing when worn out, remember all the grief adjusting drum brakes before we had discs Thumbs Up

A bit late to this one but im with MSE. Most of the wheeled plant fleet we run, dumpers, JCB's etc have a disc transmission brake, In my opinion they are crap. I seem to spend forever cleaning and adjusting them, and even when new they dont work very well.

I have never had a problem with a well maintained drum parking brake on a Landie and I wouldnt trust a disc brake on my 90.
