Remap and NFU insurance - 40% increase!!
Hey folks,

I was chatting to the tuners at LRO last weekend with a view to getting a remap. So I thought I'd ask my insurer, NFU, if they had a view on the modification.

I just fell out my chair when they called back and said it'd increase my policy by 40%!!! This was after 24 hours of 'research' on exactly what I mean't.

Is anyone else insured with NFU and had a remap? I'd be keen to know your experience too.

Aviva did not increase my premium at all. Suggest a change of insurers. My remap was Alive 150

Yeah, I'd spent a good while checking out the feedback of others on this forum re insurance before I even spoke to the likes of BAS and Alive at Pboro.

I couldn't believe it when NFU came back with a 40% increase.

I'd been with NFU for over 30 years with a protected no-claims policy. When a car overtook me and cut across too soon infront of me, resulting in damage to their rear wing, they paid them and increased my premium by 70%.
I'm now insuring both my Land Rovers through Adrian Flux.

Sounds standard with most insurers really. It all boils down to what they'd be able to prove in court. And its likely the other party just said you ran into the back of them, they wouldn't have paid out if they thought they'd win it in court.
They all put your premium up once you've had an at fault accident, because statistically you're then a higher risk, NCB is a bit of a joke as they just raise the base premium.

I think it's luck of the draw with insurance companies, they may have not charged anything for that modification for some customers, but then others they would load a large increase and hope they pay it... I think it's how they work unfortunately, it's a lottery and some people will just pay the extra to save hassle.

I am with Adrian flux and my Defender is standard apart from a snorkel, they didn't have an issue with that at all and didn't charge anymore, obviously it's a different type of mod than a remap but maybe other customers paid for me not having my premium increased!??

I insure my house and contents with NFU and it is a sizeable premium, so when I enquired with them a couple of years ago about the Defender they quoted £400 more than I pay with Aviva and that was before the remap !! With those of you having hassle with NFU are you dealing with NFU direct through their call centre/head office or are you dealing with your local office? My local office is just down the road and if I have any queries I just pop in and have a word face to face and it gets sorted out so easily. Granted some local offices are better than others but I stick with the NFU mainly due to the personal touch.

This was with my local office. They had no idea what I meant by remap, and it wasn’t “on their system”. I might try another office, or the central line instead.

They insure two vehicles, so I can always threaten to go elsewhere I guess.

NFU increased my premium by about £40 for a transfer box change and remap but it was after lots of hassle. At first they wanted an Engineers report about the mods before they would even consider it, and couldnt guarantee that they would cover it even if I provided it at my cost. I sent them links to the Ashcroft and Dynachip websites and they agreed to cover me then, but it seemed to be dependant on who i spoke to at the local office. Some are more helpful than others.

NFU are an absolute joke; I rarely ring around for a quote as I've been with my present insurers for donkeys years through a work scheme...I had a few spare hours near my renewal last month so thought I'd give NFU a buzz for a quote on my 2016 Defender.

Well, after being passed around the various departments I eventually was told it would be better to ring my local branch, I did & they quoted £770 more (yes seven hundred & seventy), REPEAT MORE, than my existing renewal...I asked them if it was comedy hour at the NFU, but all I got was (I imagine) a blank stare!

I live in an incredibly low crime postcode OX17, have a completely unmodified Defender 90 XS, and have been driving since 1975 with an unblemished driving license & insurance record.

My thoughts are that they consider Defenders too high a risk so quote stupid prices to avoid taking the risk. Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains
