I don’t know a lot about auto boxes (although I have one in my Defender) but I would think this would be a torque converter issue possibly.
The guru of all things ZF is Dave Ashcroft - drop him an email or give him a bell and he will probably know exactly what the issue is and more importantly how to fix it. |

I have looked at a few autos in my past. My first question would be why did you replace the previous box and how long ago?
Might be worth telling me the same on the previous boxes? |

Freshly rebuilt so you recently had the engine out? just wondering if a converter bolt has come loose or it hasn't be correctly engaged into the oil pump. Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest

Was manual. Change to auto was due to fiancé as an engagement gift. Car was the gift had to be auto...
First box was duff wouldnt shift and it came with the engine. Second one too had only reverse gear (believe blown A clutch pack). Was careful with the torque converter spacing and installation with this box and it drove well for a week shifting all through and locking up. On high RPMs today the screeching scratching hippies started definitely a spinning sound as increases with engine speed i.e higher frequency in P and N. Someone suggested checking “Maybe one of the torque converter bolts backed out? Check under the cover” |

As you say torque converter installation was done carefully then I would assume all the bolts were fitted correctly and torqued to spec.
Screaching would suggest a bearing problem. See if you can borrow a stethoscope and find out where the noise is loudest. If it is from the box... It is worth looking at the trans oil cooler circuit. Kinked pipes, blocked cooler, blocked pipes, plastic plug not removed. The lube circuit is generally first thing to suffer if you have a problem with the cooler circuit. |

Thanks will have a look. I’m almost convinced it sounds like a loose bolt and rotational scratching against metal. Maybe I just want it to sound like that...
A loose torque converter should knock? The mechanical sounds did sound like knocking around. Possible to damage flex plate on high load? |

Does it still have drive? If so oil pump is working and engagement is correct

She still has drive, forward and reverse. Gearing to check inspection hole.

Radiator and bonnet stay rod came off mounting contacting engine front end... Noise transmitted through whole in floor... test driving now to fully eliminate transmission Damage to viscous fan blades and coolant pipes. Rover life |

 I'd rather change the viscous fan and some hoses than change the gearbox !
