Reviving an old thread... Mine just failed too!
Ordering a new switch from Dan at Duckworths, and a super-bright LED bulb (Philips X-treme Ultinon LED P21W 6000K ) - should make reversing into my drive safer and easier Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Really easy job to do, you can access it through the top access panel under the cubby box, or if you have smaller hands from underneath. 2007 2.4 90 fettled & remapped.

Thanks pux146. Mine's a County so I have a tray rather than a cubby box. I whipped the tray out earlier, and the panel underneath. a 22mm spanner and already had it out (smaller hands would have been useful)
Problem now is that Duckworths don;t have one in stock, so I called the Lake District dealer, and also Pentland in Edinburgh... none in stock anywhere and on back-order with LR. Bought a Britpart one for delivery tomorrow as I need it fixed for my MOT... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Did you try a Ford dealer? It's a Ford Transit switch (it's a Ford transit gearbox)
There's probably nothing wrong with the Britpart switch to be honest. |

^^ That's what I thought the day I needed a stake nut for a hub urgently some years ago, not even Britpart could mess up a hub nut, surely?
After it had destroyed the thread on my stub axle I realised how wrong I was! |

Pretty easy to put the two switches together to compare the threads. Once screwed in it'll either work or it wont.

I need to get round to replacing mine at some point. Any one got either the L/R or preferably the Ford part number.
Thanks, Keith |

Thanks Chaps - what an awesome forum
I did look at the Ford switches on ebay, and just made a speedy decision (hopefully a correct decision!!) - it should arrive today, along with a Philips Extreme LED bulb replacement (may as well change at the same time) - should make reversing into my drive a LOT easier Will check the 2 switches side-by-side before install - will put a pic or 2 if I get chance to help others in the future Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

A few pics to help others replace the switch.
With the Centre Tray (or Cubby Box) whipped out, you can see the switch (circled) Click image to enlarge New part and old part side by side Click image to enlarge new part with box showing part # Click image to enlarge Chinese FFS... hope it lasts OK Also bought a "Philips X-treme Ultinon LED P21W 6000K Reverse Signal Bulb (Single) 12898X1" Click image to enlarge Sooo bright A slightly fiddly job with access to the switch. Taking the cubby and tray out is of course super easy (8 screws total, 4 screws in each), but getting a 22mm spanner on the switch is a bit of a gynaecological excersize with large hands. All in all an easy fix and a good upgrade (plenty of bright light for reversing)... Only took around 30 mins incl changing the bulb. Lashed loads of ACF in there before screwing the cover and tray back in place I only buy decent branded LED's now - having had cheap/ebay/chinese/unbranded ones fail. I put good ones in the car and motorbike already - a sound investment ... buy-cheap-buy-twice seems to be the mantra for LED bulbs... Found fuse blown on reverse lamp. Lamp measured 0.6 ohms which is far too low and would have drawn too much current. New bulb measured 3 ohms . The old bulb still worked ok but drawing this much current might have been too much for the reversing switch. Possible that the common faults on these switches are being caused by faulty lamps.

Most of the time I find it’s the econoseal connector getting a hard life from road grime or the light filling up with water. The other thing is people taking the light out to change the bulb and pulling on the plug tugging at the pins
