It really is much easier if you remove the transfer box first, then the main gearbox. Both parts are nearly manageable then, plus you can inspect and grease the infamous adaptor shaft.
You've done well to get it out as a single lump using only hillbilly tools! What's happened to your gearbox breather? |

Honestly though, I think I will get a proper crane/transmission jack for this job. It was a pain the first time. Last time it was out I did the Ashcroft conversion. I might split them and have a little look to see if it's working as it should. The breather no longer vents into the bell house. It's redirected to a manifold that connects the diffs and transfer box breathers and vents at RAI height. Think I might tap it this time it's out and put a quick connect on it though. |

Aha, both good mods. It'd be interesting to know how the AT shaft is looking, hopefully clean and oily.
If you remove the gearbox breather fitting to tap it you may find (as I did) that it is extraordinarily difficult to screw back in because it is such a fine thread and so hard to align. A gearbox jack is one of those tools that when you get one you wonder how you ever managed without! |
