It is a 5W30 but viscosities (40&100ºC) are a bit out of range. TBN is a bit low I think. Puma 110" SW

Hi, I agree with the 0W-40 or 5W-30. mine (2008 Puma) is running well on a full synthetic 5W-40 (normal SAPS) which meets WSS-M2C-913b.
BUT: First thing to do, depending on where you are in the world is to see if it has a diesel particulate filter (DPF) fitted. THis is the key question (They dont fit them in New Zealand to the Puma) because it steers you down one of two paths (a) Normal SAPs oil or (b) LOW SAPS oil (this is the additive package). If a DPF is fitted you MUST use a low SAPs oil, which is a , because low SAPs means lower zinc and phophorus, by quite a large percentage. If you use a normal SAPs oil with a DPF it will block the DPF in the end because the engine management system wont be able to clear the filter. If you have to use a LOW SAPS oil then you are into Castrol products such as Longlife 111, and SLX Professional OE, and the best of luck to you !! Once you have sorted out the DPF question and thus the SAPS question you can make your choice of viscosity, synthetic vs mineral base etc. If you think this is confusing ...beware...most of the trade dont understand it either, try asking your local Landrover Service Manager for a full data sheet on the oil they just poured in...yeah right !! THis is a case where "most modern" is definitely NOT the best. Agree. For me normal SAPS, low visc and upper end HTHS values (ie. 3.5cPas). As close as possible to a SL-CI rated. Puma 110" SW

Ah, well thats where we antipodeans have an advantage, we have an oil specialist company called PENRITE based in Australia, which has probably the best website and lubricant resource of any lube company out there. I use Penrite HPR Diesel 5W-40 Synthetic (meets WSS-M2C-913-B). PENRITE are what Castrol used to be before BP got them - obsessed with oil and lubrication. But remeber my Puma does not have a DPF fitted so I can use standard SAPs oils.

I have used semi synthatic mobil 10w 40 with ACEA A3/B3 and the engine runs 100% normal with no change what so ever. My country, it is very hot and humid through out the year!

For the non DPF vehicle, Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 for the UK which is a fully synthetic M2C-913B oil.
For the DPF vehicles, Castrol Edge or any oil which meets the Ford M2C-934C. I was talking to a dealership manager a few days ago. A Discovery3 down this way on holiday broke down and was recovered to one of our local Dealership workshops. The engine had failed, warranty procedures started but Land Rover refused because the oil was not correct (and last filled by another Dealership ). Not sure if this was grade or just specification, but you can see the problem here? TOPIx now has several lubricant sections for the newer vehicles in the Vehicle Spec Book. https://www.defender2.net/gallery/albums/userpics/11134/en_GB.pdf |

the manual recommends Castrol magnatec A1 5-30. This meets 913A, B and C and was apparently made specifically for Ford TDCI engines. Its also quite cheap and is (now) classified as a fully synth so why not just use what it says on the tin and change it frequently ?

I am sure some defender puma owners who do not have LR warranty anymore, do not use exact same spec oil and has anybody heard any engine failure due to incorrect engine oil? Unless you use something really weird and bad and not suitable at all.
The reason I went with semi synthetic mobil 10w-40 with ACEA A3/B3 is that we don’t get 5w-30 here and if it is available they are very very expensive. Since I have put semi synthetic, I will change the oil after 5000km and also the oil filter. |

Take a look at this video - particularly if you do anything in the cold - personally I'd stick with fully synth

Yes, great oil but does it meet the Ford specification? I suspect it does but there is nothing on the Opie site to show it.
