It isn't too hard to drain the system, but do ensure all inlets and utlets are capped from ingress. A nitrile glove or two is excellent.

Just had the same issue.
Can you smell coolant in the cab? The heater core on mine was leaking and I couldn't find a drip anywhere. Still not convinced that it was the only leak. I put a bottle of Rissoline Head Gasket repair in and all good. Not something that I would normally do but have got one Defender broken cannot afford two. You need to investigate further. Maybe bypass the heater at the valve and see if you still loosing coolant. Mark |

one of mine drops a cm or so below the normal and then stays there. so your continues to drop i take it? Cheers

As has been mentioned it's a normal trait fir fluid to drop a couple of centimetres below the max fill line.

I had a similar coolant loss, eventually traced it to EGR cooler. 1954 series 1-sold

so, does it continue to drop or stabilise a set distance below the fill line? without retopping that is. Cheers

I think with all my little top ups I must have done over 1l of coolant in the last 10 months.
The only reason I check it is because sometimes the engine smells hot if that makes sense? Compared to other cars I've owned that I have never had to top up, it does seem a lot. I'm going to put a new cap on it, top it up to the line again and keep an eye on it. |

This time just leave it, and see where it goes. If it goes lower than about an inch from the fill line there's an issue.

I had been looking for a coolant loss for several weeks, the level was dropping all the time, however I had to change the EGR again ( 3rd time !!!) and I could see a drip of water leaking from the cooler ,when I spoke to the Parts people at Kentdale Land Rover he said that they do sell quite a few EGR coolers for the 2.4 engine ( also D3 2.7 engine ) 1954 series 1-sold
