Engine Squeal
Hello. I'm after some help. I'm currently touring wales which is 500 miles away from my local garage...hence the silly question. My 2.4 Puma 110 has developed a squeal.... no sound when idoling, but when any load on the engine the sound appears. It does also sometimes go off completely too, then when I press the accelerator it re-appears.

I've no mechanical knowledge.....but could it be a water pump or some sort of fan belt? The engine temprature has not been affected so far. The squeal happen when the engine is cold too......

Is this something I can keep going with until it dies and hopefully I get home to Scotland, or is this something I need get fixed ASAP...Do not drive any further as may cause thousands in damage????

Cheers

Sounds like a slipping Aux drive belt, not very expensive and easy to change over really.
(There is an aircon and non aircon version. Idea )

You won't be able or tick it off the possible culprit list until changed over but I would only do it at earliest convenience.

Probably belt as Steve mentioned or possibly the tensioner as well. Where about in Wales are you?

Thanks guys. It sounds more like a belt than a whirring air noise. We are up beside Caernarfon. I’ll have a google for an independent Landy garage, that should hopefully diagnose the issue and give some advice.

Thanks

LR P/N's of for the Acc drive belt on the 2.4 motor with air con: PQS500600
Without air con: PQS500610

Air con version is longer, other than this they are identical.

Yes, I've had a remap and air box mods.

I'm just concerned that if it breaks it will cause more damage...

this might help. Only 30 mins away from Caernarfon, talked to him a while ago and was very helpful.

Take the belt off and see if it still does it. If the noise stops it's either the belt, an idler, or a pulley itself. If the noise still continues and I would look at other things like AndrewS suggests possibly turbo gasket Cheers

Spraying a little bit of wd40 onto the belt can help diagnose it too, if it goes quiet you know it's the belt. You can also do the same with pulley bearings, obviously it wont last, but if it goes quiet after you've sprayed a particular bearing you know it's the problem.

Have a look around the belt area too, if you see bits of 'rubber dust' it's a good indication your belt is slipping.
