Had several series before, so knew this would eventually happen - my first Puma breakdown! It’s a 2.4 58 plate with only 26000mi, felt a bit vague earlier then sudden power loss and temp gauge to red, so stopped straight away. Coolant tank empty, can’t see any obvious leaks but there’s dried orange fluid on passenger side of engine bay and engine mount behind what I think is the water pump (!), dipstick and oil filler all clear so shouldn’t be head gasket, not tried the heater as it’s 30C here so don’t know if the valve is the source, no white smoke before so hopefully not the egr, thinking just a split hose 🤞Now waiting for recovery then refill at home and hunt! Any words of wisdom greatly appreciated as there is much more under the Puma bonnet than in the Lightweight! Recovery in an hour (hopefully)

Thanks for the info, you're a legend! Back home now after the transporter indignity, recovery guy has discos so he sympathised. I've had a look underneath and there's loads of sticky and dry coolant originating from the water pump, all hoses look clean and fine. Cant see where on the pump, but as its not repairable I'll be replacing it. Will get a B&B pump and the coolant you recommend. I've got the workshop manual download from dgardel on here, but if you've got any tips on water pump replacement I'm all ears! Thanks again Richard |

If you've got then you should be all good really.
I found when I replaced my coolant. Well 80% ish of it if you keep it really clean that the coolant temp was lower a tiny by lookin at the guage. (No ultragauge so can't tell you temp difference but a degree .C or two I'd guess. Access is a bit of a pain and you might want some water pump pipe clip liners, I used needle nose pliers with a zip tie or two to take the pressure as they are very stiff but is a bit of a pain and tedious. Also, lastly wear gloves and don't get it on paint or anything like that. A few gloves are also needed to 'cap' the open ended pipes, its a must that everything is as clean as possible. Removing the hose to thermostat I found is easiest to drain the system, not the fuel cooler. Hope that's helps, and if anyone else's has any advice feel free to add it. Do you know what the part number for the Borg & Beck unit is?
Or just search under the normal Defender water pump part? |
