How much is the tax? I reckon you're talking about the CO² taxes right (aka “ecotaxe”)? Considering your car is already 4 years old, it's not as much as a brand new car. You can use this site to compute the cost of the registration fees, based on the CO², age of the car: https://www.service-public.fr/simulateur/c...ation#main For example, registering a 4 years old 110 (Puma engine, 295g/km of CO²) in Aude (Carcassonne) would cost 4446.76 € for a VP according to this site, but only 480,76 € if it's a "CTTE" (Light commercial) which, I reckon, a 2014 Defender should be... “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique. -- 2009 2.4 Puma Defender 90 SW 1979 Land Rover Series 3 88" Last edited by o4dn on 22nd Jun 2018 7:37am. Augustus, thanks for the PM. You HAVE to keep that, looks fab. Frankly, by the time you have sold in the UK, transfered the funds (lost some cash doing so), sourced a similarly spec'd version in france for 25% more than UK prices (if you can find one at all) and taken six months doing it to just about break even, you'll wonder why you bothered. That's why I bought my DCPU in the UK.
Only other viable option based on where you live would be to sell in the UK and buy in Spain as at least the prices are right. But you'll still pay the high import unless you get a 2.4l. In this way you might save (or make) some money versus Spanish prices, and get a LHD variant that you can add Bowler wheels etc to with the surplus cash. Finally, if you keep it UK regsitered and just return to the UK once a year for MOTs (plus sausages, ale, pies, crisps, wagon wheels etc ) and let the tax taper year by year, it'll probably be half as expensive all in. Ultimately though, you have a cracking car and I'd go for the keep it option. Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

Ouch! Is this a one-off import tax? That would pay for several trips back to the UK once a year! James

Humm, what values did you use there?
Précisez si le véhicule a été: Importé en France après avoir été immatriculé dans un autre pays (“Imported in France with a foreign registration”) Genre : Camionnette (“Light Vehicle”) Puissance administrative nationale: 8 (that would be 10 for a Defender VP, but 8 for a Light vehicle) Véhicule de collection: Non Energie: Gazole Sélectionnez votre département: 11- Aude → Y6 - Taxes à payer : 392.76 € “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique. -- 2009 2.4 Puma Defender 90 SW 1979 Land Rover Series 3 88" |

Mmm, I swear I did one that came out at 8000€. Honest guv, honest.
Just did it again and it came out at 1400€ total (400€ tax, 1000€ malus). I think Agusutus has a 2.2, so I chose the oldest variant, 2012 (avoiding the 2011 switch-over year). But I did include the 'Taux de CO2 Rejet' which you haven't noted for this model/year of Defender and which is apparently 295. Maybe that's why it spikes? Reason I did not mention the CO² there is because I reckoned a 2014 Defender is classified as a “Light commercial” vehicle, a “CTTE” in France. Mine is a 90 SW from 2009 and is a VP.
Taxes are much higher for a “VP” than a “CTTE”, increase with CO² emissions and decrease with age and also depend on the “département” of registration as well. In my previous example, for that 110 from 2014 with 295g/km of CO², it would be 4446.76 € for a “VP” (with 10 CV) and only 392.76 € if a “CTTE” (with 8 CV) in Aude. In any case, I would advise to get in touch with the local “Prefecture” and try to get an actual quote (although I heard nowadays, car registration is done over the Internet and does not work well yet...) “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique. -- 2009 2.4 Puma Defender 90 SW 1979 Land Rover Series 3 88" |

o4dn - Yup, sadly I've been over it and over it, there's no way round it.
The Malus Tax changed after the 2.4 for the second year of 2.2 from ¢6k to ¢8k. It goes down ¢800 euros a year, so if I'd bought the 2.4 I was looking at, it'd be a fraction of the current ¢4800 needed to import this 2.2. Grenadier - i hear you. It wouldn't be a buy another scenario though, it'd be a buy some plumbing and heating scenario instead. Keeping it anyway. I know I'll always regret it. Like selling my Pace RC200 mountain bike. |

That is an interesting angle, i will look into that. Although getting a quote is nigh on impossible as the local office refers you to the internet only and I can't take that any further as I don't have a social sec number yet etc. |

Overrated. Use one of these. Polar spec, more than good enough for a Pyrenean winter, just 1000€: Click image to enlarge Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |
