Thnx Blackwolf. But first of all I like the versatility of the extractor. I can use it for several other purposes. And evenly important I service 3 cars then I would need 3 of those plugs. And than this option is a lot cheaper at 40 euros. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

Best piece of kit I have ever fitted makes an oil change so much simpler and with no mess whatsoever. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

Extractors are handy for various things, If you want to replace a coolant header tank or something, you can just suck the tank out rather than drain the whole system. If you overfill with oil you can suck a bit out rather than have to drop the lot and start again.
The sump bung on a Puma engine definitely isn't magnetic, although I do think dropping the oil while warm does a better job of flushing sludge and larger bits of debris out of the sump, extractors aren't quite so good a that. |

I don't know. When I look at you tube, there might be some truth in it, that draining also doesn't remove all the oil.

it depends on the design of the sump, the Puma sump on the Defender is quite well designed, so drains well. I had a Volvo where the sump was basically an inverted dome with the bung right at the bottom, the oil filter was also upside down at a 45 degree angle so you could unscrew it easily and it was empty by the time you did - thoughtful design.
Some cars have the sump bung above the bottom of the sump like that Merc in that video. The Ford/PSA 1.4/1.6 Diesels, have a recess in the sump for the bung, so when you look inside it's over 2cm higher than the bottom of the sump! There is always going to be a bit of oil left in there as it'll collect in oil galleries, tappets and in the cam carrier castings on most engines, but it's not normally enough to worry about. Most of the sludge, metal and carbon deposits end up in the sump where it gets trapped by the oil strainer. I've seen all sorts come out of a sump, the little plastic seal you tear out of the top of oil bottles for example. And here is a picture of a bit of gearbox shim on the sump bung of my Mini (I've a rebuild planned for it anyway), that was never going to be sucked out by an extractor. Click image to enlarge |

Perhaps we can do the same test as in the video. If anybody has a spare sump fill it with water, pull the plug and see how much water remains. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

On the Defender Puma the drain is right at the back, and in it's own purposely pressed low point, the engine is also set nose up. I'm confident there wouldn't be anything worth mentioning left in there.
As I said I've got an oil extractor, it's great. But I still think it's pointless on the Defender, because taking the sump bung out is the clean bit, unscrewing the oil filter is the messy bit. |

The verdict is still out. Yes it was super easy, took Some time. But i found it wasn’t Holding the vacum as expected. Therefore i had to pump more often. Oil was almost completely drained. Just a few drops. Will try to avoid it next time. I also Will contact the company if the vacum is normal.
But...... as Some of you have seen already, at the final check of the oillevel the dipstick point broke off and now i can’t remove the dipstick tube.... to be continued....: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover |

as it fills with oil the vacuum reduces. This is the one I have I think;
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pela-Oil-Extracto...B002EPSF7E If the hose is long enough put the reservoir lower than the engine, that way as the vacuum dissipates it'll work as a syphon. |

Appreciate this is an old thread but having just missed the pan and the 4 layers of cardboard box put out especially to catch any over-eager oil, and therefore spent more time cleaning the drive than doing the oil change it pricked my interest. I have mowers and other things to do so I’ll either get the femco for next time or maybe use the extractor.
Out of interest, did you do the extractor (with the 6L pela) in 2 goes (meaning I need an empty can ready rather than just using the new oil container once done) or did either the Pela have a bit of extra capacity or the filter hold enough that the sump contents fitted into the extractor? (For a Puma). Cheers Neil. |
