2013 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 HT Santorini Black
vbs encore 16" or 18"?
Afternoon chaps,

can anyone give advice on which rim diameter to go for.

ive got my heart set on a set of vbs encore wheels for my 90, ive seen the pic of the double cab running 285 75 16 tyres which looks amazing but also seen the same wheels but in 18".

my 90 is completely standard and just for road work so thinking the et10 is perfect.

can anyone give any pros or cons to either size and a few pics if your running that set up?

Hi Tom,
The choice of tyre size and tread type will have more effect on the handling and performance than wheel rim.
After 68 years of experience, Landrover chose to fit 235/85/16 tyres as the best all round compromise for on/off road, summer and winter use, and fuel efficiency.
That size may not be the 'look' you want, and of course you'll decide on how you want it to look.
Choosing an 18" rim will mean you have to choose wider tyres and they'll be more expensive too.

I've ran 285/75/16 and 265/75/16 before, but doubt I would again.
Narrower tyres perform better off-road in most UK situations, are more fuel efficient and the steering will probably feel better.
My 110 is running standard Continental AT 235/85 and my Ibex is on BFGoodrich 255/85 MT, neither chosen on looks. Wink

I've just seen the VBS is a ripoff copy of the ZU alloy. I'd be inclined to go with the quality original.

I've only run 16" rims but was in a similar dilemma to you, so did some similar research.

I found that most advised sticking to 16" for off-road use as the thicker/deeper profile of tyre offers more protection to the rim.

For road use then 18" (with the same tyre circumference) will have a lower profile tyre, so will roll less in corners, but may give a slightly firmer/harsher ride.

18" tyres are also more expensive, when I was looking the equivelent BFG KO2 in 18" was 40% more expensive!

Ah thank you for replies guys

I too have ran many sizes but this defender was supposed to be "the one"!

I shall nip to a few shows and have a wander through the car park for inspiration.

See another contender was the wolfs with the wider offset for better anti oil tanker.

My heads gone again Big Cry

The ZU Rims have a 1400kg load rating vs 1050kg for the VBS and also have all the major approvals (which I haven't found listed for the VBS).

I may be biased as I have ZU rims and can't fault them in any way. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Yes mate,

Went for the 16” in the end as 18” didn’t quite look right with lower profile tyres.

Nice and easy to clean although they do throw sprsy up the body work because of the offset.

Im happy with them
