Starting Problems TD5.
Hi Folks,

I've gone through changing a few of the obvious. I've changed the Injector Loom, the Injector Seals and rings, and also the fuel filter valve.

When I put the key in the ignition and turn it i can hear the fuel pump. The starter keeps turning the motor over but it sometimes will and sometimes wont start. It was taking longer and longer to start even if the engine was warm. Now it barely starts after trying until i killed the battery.

I've charged up the battery and after a few times it started.. so I drove it around and i turned off the engine on a hill. I tried turning it over and again it wouldn't start. However, everytime I bump start it, it starts immediately. I've spent so much money trying to problem solve it. I'm convinced its the Starter motor, can it be anything else?

I would check the loom again, I replaced mine and within a month oil was creeping into the electrical contacts on injectors 3/4/5 cleaning these out it would start fine and run for a week or so. I have now gone to town on sealing another new loom and so far it’s all good. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Put a load on the starter motor and see instead of throwing parts at it and changing the variables.

If you have a access to a nanocom or similar check the rpm when cranking if it's erratic it will be your starter motor that is shorting and corrupting the crank sensor signal, hence the reason it starts with a bump start.

Check your crank sensor. It is located on the passenger side of the flywheel housing. 👍 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

How is he going to check it? Why would he need to change it? what are the symptoms that tell you that?

Take your startermotor out and clean the contacts and the small gearbox it has. I did mine last year also because starting became slow. The grease in the gearbox was almost solid and I hardly could turn the motor by hand. Clened it and put grease in there and it starts now quicker then when I bought it in 2009. Roel

My starter turns the motor. I changed the crank position sensor yesterday and no luck. It still doesnt work. How difficult is it to get at the starter motor without hoisting the vehicle?

Very easy, no issue at all. Just lay under it to undo the pos wire(s) and to get at the bottom bolts. The top 15mm is the PITA. You’ll need a couple different length extensions to get to it and you’ll only be able to turn is a 1/4 turn at a time. Remove the engine sound cover to make it easy.
