Yeah, those horrible spats really put me off. I just wondered with skinny rims and tyres if you could get the wheels back under the arches to get rid of the spats? Thought RR axles might give a better ride?
The search continues... Narrowing it down to my ideal would be Marine Blue soft top, tax-exempt, petrol preferably V8 with galv chassis, all under £5k James MY2012 110 2.2TDCi XS SW Orkney Grey - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic43410.html MY1990 110 200TDi SW beautifully faded Portofino Red - https://www.defender2.net/forum/post743641.html#743641 MY1984 90 V8 Slate Grey - https://www.defender2.net/forum/post744557.html#744557 Instagram @suffolk_rovers |

Ooh Ian, is that an offer for a commission??
Part of me is thinking to pick up a really rough one, then I can change it how I want, but that's a little open chequebook for my liking. Otherwise, I'll just have to keep an eye out. I just want something mechanically sound even if it needs a little work to the body interior. I'm in no hurry. Thanks all. That is quite an achievement. When I started looking for a Series, I had exactly this budget in mind for something that would be used very occasionally and not have too much value. I ended up spending more than double! |

That’s the joy of doing a later series 3 I’ve never added up what I’ve spent doing my series 1s, the last one got way out of hand And I’m still messing about with it, I’m riveting the door top panels at the moment! I really enjoyed doing the S3, parts are dirt cheap, very easy to get, although I did struggle to find some straight outer wings for a while. Everything was done how we wanted it to be done, I brought it blind from an old forum member on here a few years ago, Took it home and forgot about it while I sourced a new chassis, V8, diffs, and finnished the other projects. To build one up on a brand new chassis and suspension makes life soooo easy. If I was offered another, I wouldn’t think twice about it. I’m still hankering after a Forward Control, but going down that route, it’s got to be the right one 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Series 3’s are the way to go if on a tight budget, as Ian says parts are cheap. I’m starting to collect parts for a late 80in (after saying I wouldn’t get another S1) and some of the prices are eye watering but I’m not in any big hurry so will keep an eye out at Autojumbles which I usually find better than EBay.

James, you seem to be in the same boat as a friend of mine in the SII Club.
By mis-managing what he has bought and sold (and regretting it) he has ended up without a SII to drive for the summer. He's been scouring every auction and website and throwing suggestions like "what do you think of this one" at a couple of us all year. He is finding it very difficult to get a decent vehicle at a sensible price, more difficult than I thought it would be, in fact. He got so desperate that he even considered old Discos and RR Classics, even though he knows nothing about them and they are a mile from what he really wants. By not being in a hurry and not rushing into a poor purchase I think you will eventually find what you want, it's just a matter of time and patience (and keeping an eye on the SII forum. ) Said friend organises the pub meet, so you can come and cry into your beer together at the next one! |

Thanks Slidey, I know what's he's going through. I guess that's Richard A? But I'm not sure I even have approval for a 3rd so I shall just wait for the perfect one to come along. Just keen to get in before they're all beyond my means, prices seem to be steadily creeping up.
I really want tax exempt and I like the split screen and no proper dash so think that means a Series 2 or 2a? I just like the very basic stripped back interiors. Thanks Jon, I'd not seen that one. Messaged him for a few more details and photos.

So apparently it's a Series 2a. He's wanting £3-4k seems decent money? James
