Soft A bar - captive nuts
I decided to take a few corroded bits of the 110, get them prep'd and thought I'd spray them when I do the rear cross member.

I've started with the front A bar. The bumper brackets were pretty tired so they've had a rub down and degrease, I've now moved onto the metal plates at the top that hold the brackets used to secure it to the bonnet slam panel.

The first 3 bolts came out really easily however in the usual fashion I'm struggling with the 4th. Its rotating but not coming out so I suspect that means the captive nut has come loose and is rotating as well.

I would consider just putting it back together but since taking it off I've decided I fancy using the hole in the center to mount a light bar so I'm still wanting to get the metal plate off and get it treated.

Has anyone got any suggestions on how i can get this out without irreparable damage?

if its the top one in the photo then Id cut or grind the head off, remove the bracket and then you can see what you have got in terms of the captive nut, if the whole lot is turning then drill it out and fit the next size up. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

sometimes applying a lever such as a screw driver in the gap will create enough friction in the right places to allow the fixing to release but that looks pretty rusty DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I'm sorry to say, I've found when captive nuts in plastic start spinning you can't do a lot with them. If you try drilling them out the heat from the drill melts the plastic and makes the captive nut spin even more. Plumbers freeze spray on it every so often while you're drilling might work, but I've never actually tried it.

I may have a way to get my lightbar bracket mounted without removing the plate.

Would have preferred to buzzweld it first. Keith
