Try bump starting it. I had a starter motor die and even though it was spinning well it wouldn't fire.
The starter motor was arching inside and the noise from this was effecting the crank position sensor. Because of this the ecu wouldn't tell the injectors to fire and It wouldn't run. It would bump but wouldn't go off the key. New starter motor later and it's been all good 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)
2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r

If you can borrow one, try replacing the battery. You may be getting enough voltage drop to stop the fuel pump relay from closing.
Try putting your finger on the fuel pump relay whilst cranking. If it vibrates that's your problem.
Happened to me; took ages to resolve.

If you found oil on the Ecu connector i would say you have a faulty injector loom.

Check for oil on connector under from rocker cover, if you find oil, there maybe your issue.

I will definitely try bump starting it. I changed out the CKP (CPS) but it did not fix the problem. I managed to get it to start for about 20 seconds while wiggling the red connector on the ECU, but could not repeat. I also tested the fuel pressure at the regulator and it had 4 bar. I have another battery I can try but the current one is pretty new. I changed out the injector loom when I found oil in the ECU connector. I also changed the injector seals and washers.

Make sure the connector on the injector harness where it exits underneath the rocker cover is fully pushed into place.

Yes for sure... cleaned it several times and tested it out to the ECU connector and it tested good.

Its sounding more & more like oil contamination inside the ECU.
Pull off the red ECU plug and look inside for signs of oil then leave it in position over a paper tissue and check later for oil droppings.

I would still suspect the CKP. I know you changed it but I can't think about anything else on the moment.

I thought I did a job close to you in January but according to Google earth it was still 88 km.

Yes, the red connector on the ECU was full of oil but I took the ECU out and cleaned it. I also cleaned the connector and replaced the injector loom, seals and copper washers. I am pretty sure that's what started the problems but no way to confirm.

I suspect the same thing about the CKP. I ordered the cheap LR terrafirma code reader yesterday to see what it can tell me. It will be a few days before it arrives.

Did you actually change the crank sensor or just clean it ?

If you replaced it, what make did you replace it with ? A certain blue box brand are notorious for not letting the engine start.

Did the sensor have the shim NSJ 000010 fitted, if not it might be worth fitting one to see if it helps.

I did replace it and it was with a cheap one... so i am a bit suspicious about it. I was wondering about the Shim. I don't think it had one. At least I didn't see it if it did. It also didn't have a O ring on it. Is that normal for an early TD5?

The shim was fitted under a service bulletin as some had it missing.

Mine had been running for many years without it with no issues and then it started missing and the non existent shim was the problem.

It is possible that the shim is still in place on the casing but if not for a couple of euros it is worth a try.

My sensor does have the O ring but looking on the web they are shown with and without. Did the old sensor have an O ring, if it did move it over to the new sensor.
