Mine wasn't dropping diesel into the oil, just losing water. Still got the old head in the shed. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Yes it is possible to see the crack with the naked eye or magnifying glass, look across from the exhaust (turbo) side into the injector housings , you will see a crack at around 1 oclock a very fine hairline crack right at the top extending straight down around 25mm they always crack in the same place look carefully at 1,2,3 and 4 cylinders.you can some times feel it internally with your finger nail.

The head on my TD5 cracked on number 1 cylinder and caused diesel to get into the engine oil. Oil level rose and engine over ran on motorway causing massive engine damage. 2 new cylinders required, bottom end of engine rebuilt and repair to the cylinder head. The head was welded by Unit 2B engineering and refitted. This happened at 100k miles, vehicle was run without any problems until 125k when I sold it. Cost of repairing the head compared to a new head meant this was a chance worth taking. A close eye was kept on engine oil levels for the first 5k miles.

What are the contact details for Unit 2B Engineering, google isnt being much help?

I would quite like my old head pressure tested and welded if possible so I can sell it if it is indeed cracked.

You'll find him on ebay if you look along the lines of td5 head welding.

Ive had a few done for customers at their request on a budget and 4 years down the line its still fine.

Hmm. I have my old engine in the garage. Turner 15P block & AMC head. No cracks or anything, timing chain snapped though so valve damage etc. I had plans to strip it down anyway, based on this it would be worth selling?

Depends if there's any damage on it. I was having vague ideas about keeping it on the shelf just in case. I'll have a think and let you know?

I've had 2 heads repaired (by the fellah on ebay) on our works td5s, one of them was about 2 years (30k miles) ago.

No problems. I wouldn't hesitate recommending the service.

Cracked cylinder heads
How common is this issue of the cracked cylinder heads?

I think going porous is more common than cracking.
