Do you know how they repair it? If its welded I would be concerned about distortion.

Oil level increases on the dipstick due to diesel leaking into the engine. Not uncommon in the td5 engine ! N. |

i would check the injector seals first as this give's the same symptons when they are gone.
If the head is cracked I would locate the crack first as this needs to be completly cut out and new ali welded in other wise the crack will increase if not done properly, if its a large crack then you could have the head distort from the heat of welding; safer to get a good second hand head if you can't afford a new one. |

We do lots of aluminium welding at work & I wouldn't do a head as its unlikely to stay flat and if it needs skimming its unlikely to run right again. As Tazmarkuk says get a good second hand one.

When my head went I read lots about having it welded and also saw the guy on ebay his fix is for a very localised crack on the injector port, they don't normally go there and are actually more likely to crack inside on the fuel rail. Everything I read seemed to point that as the head expanded and contracted a lot then a weld would most likely fail over time.

Thanks for confirming my own thoughts that a repair is not a great idea !
May go with a turners reconditioned head, which they say are LR heads, for £695 and 12 month warranty. N. |

Hi Nidge,
That's a lot of money for a recon head, how much are the AMC heads now? I bought mine from adventure4x4 £1100, at least 2 issues have been addressed with the AMC head. Cracking water jacket, mine did this on cyl.1 and cracking injector locations. This is down to very thin material in this area which is much thicker on the AMC heads. When you do change your head on the outside edge of this location the edge is very jagged and sharp. This is perfect for a crack to start from, spend a couple of hours and make a nice polished radius with a small file and finishing with 400 grit emery paper. This will remove any stress raisers. Do the same also if you get an AMC head, I highly recommend this choice if you can save up the extra. The water jacket problem I had looks like poor quality casting, I am unsure how to make this better on a recon head. Maybe impregnate with a sealant. This method is common with engine manufacturers. Finally fit steel dowels not plastic ones. Steve |

Hi all , td5 heads never ever crack in the internal fuel rails ,they crack at the top of the injector housings on Number 1,2,3 rarely on number 4 and never on number 5 for some reason. the reason that they crack and fill the sump up with diesel is simply down to badly adjusted injectors causing an overload to the injector housing , there is no warping to the surface of the head when welding as the whole head only reaches only 80 degrees c when welding takes place , the crack is ground out and welded front and back then machined and then pressure tested to 120 psi which is double the pressure that you would normally expect to see in the fuel rail , from around 240 of these over the last 4 years one was returned with a pin hole leak ,so that would be close to a 100 percent success rate , alloy tig welding is permanent and does not fail after a few months or years , if it were to fail it would fail straight away

I replaced the head on mine with a new AMC one ...£££££££
With the old head removed Are you likely to see the crack ?? as I can't even see a hair line one in mine or is pressure testing the only way to go. It was dumping 2 litres of diesel into the sump a week . Nidge |
