[Wanted] Series Soft Top possibly
As the sun comes out and I see more and more people with beautiful Series, it makes me wonder if I need to get one before they all go well out of my price range?

I'm lucky enough to have a little money in the bank earning practically nothing, so wonder/dream that it might be better invested in a Series that I could at least enjoy as well?

Would need to be tax-exempt, soft top, good genuine runner, ideally a V8 but more likely a tdi transplant for more practicality (?) and possible a galv chassis? Whilst I don't mind doing a little cosmetic work I'm not looking for a full restoration.

Am I dreaming? James

Not at all James, they are great fun!

If you look carefuly enough there are some very nice ones about that needn’t break the bank,
Word of mouth is a good way to get a good one,
Or join a club, they seem to chang hands for reasonable money in those circles.

Any idea on which model?
Going by you spec, you should be able to get a nice series 2/3 with a TDi between 4-6k even on a galv chassis.

Keep us posted on what you find/look at Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

What spurred it off is seeing a SWB Series 2 with galv chassis and tdi, for sale at £7.5k which seems quite reasonable for the condition. However this is really more than I wanted to spend, but it is lovely.

I think I want a SWB but not too fussy, so long as soft top and full of character! Are any better than others?

It would only be used as a local runabout on odd occasions so fuel efficiency isn't a concern. Just want to be cheap to keep on the road i.e. no tax and cheap insurance.

I follow the Suffolk/Cambs/Essex Series Club on Facebook so should probably join them at there next pub meet, see what they say. James

I just sold that for £6500, fully gone through and absolutely on the button. Great to drive and so much character!

Don’t go for a tdi in a series, horrid conversion ( and I LOVE 200 tdi’s). A nice well sorted swb 2.25 petrol is a great toy. I like late 2a’s with single wiper motors the best but that’s just a personal thing, judge each one by their merits.

Back in the day (1970's) my first Land Rover was a 1959 SERII truck cab 2 1/4 petrol. Added a Cadillac glass panel and 4 over centre clips to roof making a "panoramic roof" or "Cabriolet Convertible", cab roof fitted in load space with bungees to hold it down. Big grins all round when driving with the lid off!
Growing family and a refusal on my part to use the company Cortina to tow a caravan - aftermarket hard top fitted (truck cab panels taken in P/X) - still big grins.
Series Land Rovers are easily altered to suit your purpose, chat to Turner Engineering for more power to keep up with traffic, buy the best you can afford and save a little to alter it (rather than"modify it") to suit you.
End of grumpy old git lecture - BUT IT IS ABOUT FUN!

Series Land Rovers are great fun as long as you don’t want to do regular long trips as they can be a tad tiring but for local trundling around they are great. My son has my Series 1 86in now but I have an early V8 Ninety soft top to do longer trips, however I’m in the process of buying a late model 80in to do a mild recommission as I miss having one in the garage. If you haven’t driven one try one a few times to see if you can live with it, some can’t and sell them on after a year or so, but if you can live with one they are great fun in summer with the top rolled up or removed.

Thanks for the comments. I really just want one for local Sunday drives, may trips to school in summer. So not worried if its not comfortable etc. Hoping it might appreciate with small improvements over the years.

Jeremy, what don't you like about tdi's in series, sounds like a good thing on paper?

If you are just going to use it as you mention i.e. local and just trundling around then a 2.25 or 2.5 Petrol engine is ideal. A good one is smooth running, robust and pretty quiet, far nicer than a Tdi for the use you are intending IMO.

You know you need at least 3 Land Rovers at any one time, main, backup and the oldest, slowest and probably most reliable spare Whistle

Hi

Sorry didn't realise that. One is a really nice truck cab with galv chassis but has all the age and patina for £8k, the other is an early 1960's for about £5k.

If you are looking its worth joining as people often list there first before ebay.
