Good observation Road Force, this type of design is used by several outfitters so all must have a similar issue, however as the defender is a ladder chassis vehicle then that will probably absorb most of the shock, but the units are all hollow and wood so may collapse, but in all honesty if i was hit that hard from the rear then there would most likely be considerable damage to both vehicle and occupants no matter what the set up was in the back.
The units are secured to a board by simple bolts, then the board is secured to the floor of the vehicle. the units may shear off and be moved aside during an impact, or contribute to the stiffening of the inner body. its not possible to go though all the various scenarios as there are too many variables, however I may have improved the roll over strength due to the height of the units on the driving side, which is more of a concern to me personally. many thanks Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html Elgar -TDCI(Puma) 110XS Dormobile - now sold Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response - DC126 Last edited by wyvern on 27th Dec 2017 11:20pm. Yeah, I guess it's a trade off: usability over safety. To be fair, if safety is our primary concern, then why drive Defenders, right?
On the other hand: if rolling over is your major concern, have you considered a roll cage? Happy travels! PS: you could cut the floor/shelve/bed board into 2 pieces with a 45 degree cut, so as to make them slide on top of each other on rear impact. It will have the added benefit of being able to use only one half of the table, should you ever need to. Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000 |

Like the majority of those on the site I am happy with what I have and yes, the roll cage is an option, but not a requirement.
Ive had land rovers for about 30yrs and each has been a unique experience with good bits and not so good bits, but each on was better than the previous one. As you say, if i were that concerned about the vehicles' safety, then I would probably not drive a defender. It has relatively poor breaks, poor roll over safety due to weak A and B posts, no airbags, no crumple zones, no side protection .. the list goes on and on ... But its a defender. My camping set up in our 110 is only one way of setting up a camper. Roof tents, pop tops, hammocks, Dormatic seats and bed boards all have good and bad points, and each is a compromise - in reality it would probably be cheaper to buy a VW California after I have completed the conversion, but it wouldn't be my conversion, my landrover , my way, and it wouldn't give me as many smiles per miles as the defender gives me now. ......its a landrover thing ... others just dont understand The bed board /table is cut out of the centre of the floorboard, so is smaller than the back, so cutting it would serve no purpose other than to become 2 potential projectiles in the event of any accident. .... so maybe not a good move when it fits aways snugly on the floor in its own recess. Indeed, Poppy looks lush in comparison to the Dormobile Nevertheless, I liked the ingenious way of how the seats folded and lined up into a 'bed' in the grey 110. But I'm sure with Poppy it will be another level of camping Great pic that one, was a fab day. In fact, mine is next to yours at the end of the line, gosh it changed a bit since then. Quick update on Poppys’ progress...
Just taken delivery of a new frontrunner ladder to replace the roof rack mounted expedition one ordered on Monday - delivered on Wednesday cool! The new ladder will allow the roof to rase and let me climb up on to the roof when its in is normal lowered position . http://www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/be...0-110.html (Have provisionally sold the expedition ladder as well ... ) Also delivered today x2 red 185w roof mounted LED spots for the wagon ... so will have a little extra light when off road. The wiring for these is already fitted, just need to run the wiring to the roof ... so will make the most of having the roof off to run to the lights. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/122992483894 We are off to have the raising roof at X-Vision-X in Germany in a couple of weeks time - which will take about a week to fit - Then its ready to go on long trans European trips. We have our ‘kip’ mattresses and 4 season sleeping bags to start .. then we’ll see how we go from there. http://www.x-vision-x.de To light the bed area I have bought some small flexible clip on LED lights that can be recharged from a USB port http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B075H1QL5N/ref=...item_image and some strip lights for illuminating the back of the vehicle when cooking etc ... http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00HSF65EA/ref=...item_image So thats enough to be going on with !! We have now completed the last big part of the camper conversion and have had a week long visit to Germany to have the pop top roof conversation.
We took a trip over the channel to Dunkirk and made our way to a Germany, and a small town on the edge of the Black Forrest not that far from Stuttgart, where X-Vison-X did their magic in 7 days. Click image to enlarge The results are game changing for us as we can sit and relax in the back using the table with out having to duck our heads all the time. We have much more space than in our previous 110, with room to cook and chat with out climbing over things. The bed is ready in seconds with out going out of the vehicle, then put away again in less than 5 mins. (well we are newcomers to the pop top family - so that will probably get quicker as we get familiar with the job!) The bed is very comfortable with an adjustable frame to allow more spring if needed, and got the 5* approval from my partner! entry and exit to the bed is easy with the way we have the cabin set up. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Inside, the bed can be pushed up into the gods to give full standing space and has a good area at the rear of the vehicle to stand and get undressed/dressed. The nights we used it were both warm and cool and the top was both airy in the warm weather, and keep us warm when buttoned up in the cool Click image to enlarge also fitted was a new frontrunner access ladder to the rear that is not connected to the roof rack - it looks good and easy to use, as well as being light weight. I have also added x2 LED 9’ off road spot lights to the roof rack and am in the process of wiring them up after I fit a raised air intake that I have bought from a great forum member Click image to enlarge Next is to fit a water tank, gas bottle holder and then get some trips to shake down and fine tune the fittings.
