PUMA 2.4- black smoke out of exhaust when accelerating
Hi,

New to the forums and have got a 57 plate 90 which runs and pulls brilliantly. No issues when idle and no lack of power.

Noticed lots of black smoke from the exhaust when accelerating through 3rd/4/5th. Smoke does reduce once through.

I'm the third owner and fairly sure there has been a re-mapping in the past, according to the dealer I purchased from.

Any easy fixes/or issues with previous re-mapping that can be dealt with on the driveway before £££ at a specialist garage?

Cheers. Tom

The first thing is to get a diagnostic check and investigate any fault codes thrown up.

Thanks very much.
Service and MOT were done last week with no advisories....
Is this something that should have been picked up then?

Depends on whether the service included a diagnostic check.

That a pretty common feature of the worse quality or more powerful remaps.
Black smoke is fuel that isn't fully burnt. It shouldn't be there, it's costing you money and some people think it looks cool.

I've been on holiday with a few remapped cars from three major Land Rover tuning companies (Alive, BAS, Storm) over both TD5 and Puma, they've all smoked badly when accelerating up a hill and that's not something I want out of my car.

It's not like people need any more encouragement to hate 4x4s, a face full of black smoke is hardly going to help matters.

A quality remap should not over fuel to the extent of producing black smoke IF the engine and associated emission control systems are all working properly - hence the suggestion of a diagnostic check.

Mine doesn't smoke..

Over fuelling is typically the issue, and often comes from backstreet tuners where people want a cheap 'chipping' style or 'tuning box' remap instead of paying for a quality premium service tuner. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Visually checking that your garage changed the air filter when they serviced it would be a worth while move too.

My BAS remap give a black haze out of the exhaust when you have it flat out on the motorway.

Just a few ideas, I'd be looking at fuel pump metering valve (vcv), injectors or egr of you are getting a lot of smoke.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Get a egr blank plate, they're only a few quid and easy to fit it will isolate the egr and any problems with it but will throw a fault code unless you have a egr close map put on.

Can you not Take it back to the dealer if you only bought it last week?

Diagnostics should cost around the £45 mark.
