Sounds like excessive crankcase pressure rather than oil pressure if removing the dipstick makes a difference (removing the dipstick cannot affect the oil pressure).
The bad news about this is that it probably indicates worn or damaged bores or pistons/rings. |

Yeah its certainly a crankcase pressure issue if the dipstick lets the pressure out. Have you checked the PCV system? You could have a blockage as there is always meant to be a small amount of blow-by past the pistons into the crankcase.

Thanks very much. Rebuilt the engine fairly recently and assumed all else was ok as it ran fine for the first few hundred miles. I'll certainly have a look at it now though. Could save me a fortune in a new engine.

Not completely sure about the Defender TDCI, but on other diesels I've worked on, it's usually the pipework leading from the cam cover to the fresh air inlet as it's under slight vacuum when running.

as Ben said, looking from the front of the engine, towards the rear drivers side of the rocker cover is a rubber pipe that runs towards the air filter to turbo pipe, check this pipe is clear.
this pipe takes the crank case gases into the engine to be combusted. if the pipe is clear and removing the filler cap with the engine running shows lots of misty crank case gases escaping you need to look for a reason why, generally it wont be good news but could be injector seals which isnt too bad, worst case would be cylinder head/gasket, or piston rings. good luck DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Hi miles, I had the same problem on my 2010 Puma, it turned out to be injector seals, I also took the rocker box off to clean it. I have left a conclusion yesterday explaining what I did, if you want to read it, it is titled oil leak conclusion. I hope you sort it.

Thanks very much for the advice. The problem appears to have been the breather pipe outlet on the rocker cover. I removed the plastic cover over the breather pipe which revealed a rubber diaphragm which had a weak spring underneath which I stretched back into shape. It appears carbon had sealed the diaphragm to the breather pipe outlet - which meant pressure built up - to produce more carbon to seal further. Problem seems to be resolved. Driven for several hours with no symptoms, so fingers crossed!
