Td5 into a 2.4 Puma? Anyone heard of this done?
Hi chaps,
Getting a bit bored of my 2.4tdci and think it’s getting near the end of its life, has anyone done or heard of a td5 engine & gearbox swap?
I understand engine and box mounts will have to be moved.
Rad/ intercooler the same,
Accelerator is the same
Fuel tank just needs the td5 pump fitted,
Td5 defender ecu need programming to the 10AS module,
And would have to use defender dash gauges/ wiring.
Anything else difficult I have overlooked?

Do not have the money for fancy Cummins or 3.2 tdci swaps.
Was thinking either td5 or OM606?
Thought td5 would be a little more easy to do.

Thanks

It might be easier to just sell it and buy a tidy TD5, you're pretty much going to have to buy most of a TD5 anyway. Tidy TD5's seem to be about the same money as a scruffy Puma. (comparing like for like)

Cummins engines from a scrap Daf truck aren't that expensive.

Prop shafts will also be different lengths I think.

If you can get the dash electrics to work (someone on the D90 forum was designing a CANbus unit to work the puma dash with analogue inputs) then I'd go for the OM606a with a Dieselmeken FiP...

Only hardship will be mating it to the gearbox... although the SLK 6 speed (other models also fit, as long as the starter motor mount is in the same position) fits the '606 and works well, so you then need to mate the gearbox to the LT230.

606 is a lovely engine. Revs well and so smooth

The type certificate issued will prevent a downgrade of an EU CoC 2.4 PUMA to a TD5. You may go national single permit and that may well render the car totally unsellable. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.

Or just not tell anyone about it, and enjoy driving with the modified engine.

Take the TD5, man, and enjoy the fresh air intake Whistle

A late TD5 is as good as an early Puma Thumbs Up Mr. Green
