New top gear is awful.

Old top gear wasn't as good near the end of the Clarkson days due to the pc brigade and BBC sensitivity.

Grand tour is far better and getting better as the restrictions on them pass.

The current top gear lot even admitted they don't do all the driving!! Mike

Hmm, think I maybe the only one here who likes Clarkson, Hammond and May! Laughing

Anyway, I agree with a couple of others, I'm not sure that the Velar is in the same league as the other 2, and in turn tried to dull it down a bit perhaps?! Shocked

I like the Clarkson, Hammond, May line up, even better in Grand Tour. They seem far more willing to say it as they see it which is quite liberating these days even when I don't agree with them.

Watching the "new" presenters on Top Gear reading from scripts that could have come from a few years ago is truly painful, like seeing your favourite TV or radio character replaced by a new actor - they may be saying the same things but it lacks any feeling of conviction. I watched "Joey" test driving an american muscle car and I swear he was using an old Clarkson script, right down to the inflection. If you closed your eyes you'd think you were listening to Clarkson pretending to be American (although he'd make an arse of that). When they got back to the mandatory "in the studio standing around the cars bit" the four of them looked so ill at ease and embarrassed to be there it was cringeworthy. They just lack any chemistry between them and it shows. The previous line up, most of the time you know it's probably scripted but it never felt like it, it always felt very natural.

Maybe the BBC should have spent less money on salaries for "stars" and spent more money on creatives who can put a new spin on the show and figure out what it could be rather than trying to recreate what it was. A bit like when Clarkson rescued the original TG from the doldrums by injecting a new enthusiasm and ideas into the show. TG was becoming formulaic before Clarkson left and the new TG just kept the same tired old formula and replaced the presenters with mannequins too afraid to be original and without the charisma to make it their own.

Thankfully GT is still funny, still ridiculous and still has the feel of being presented by genuine people and, surprise, has some original ideas. Season 1 was good with some mistakes as they felt their way but some real high points (the SAS training ground filmed like a video game was brilliant). Season 2 was better still as they dropped the bits that just didn't work and concentrated on what does. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Velar
Of course it was staged-its Television!

I have a sneaky suspicion that the Velar probably would have performed better than the others in the final race/test so had to be handicapped.

The only slightly interesting thing that came from it all for me was that the cars were on the whole more durable than I expected, and that I was surprised that no crash assist/airbags etc deployed.

I'm also of the opinion that TG should have been left to die- Chris Evans was dire and I really struggle to watch the new team.

I have watched some of the Grand tour, and there have been some genuinely good moments- but it too (like Top Gear was) is a bit too wooden.

Years ago I used to avidly watch TG, but stopped watching it because of Clarkson and his sycophant team (though Clarkson makes a good read)

Anyway, I have tried to like the re incarnation of TG but having just watched the tail end of the last episode, (like the op) I will never watch another second of the programme ever again. What a load of complete tosh!!

Top gear should have had it plug pulled years ago, How I see clarksons point of view of cars, " if its not an aston martin, its Censored " The other two are just his little pals he likes to wind up. With the three of them destroying classic cars, they said about the morris marina, was a shed, Yes but that shed still had rare bits on it, That you cannot get hold!
" the stig" he cannot race of peanuts! the one that come out and said he was the stig, Did a round in the btcc about 8 years ago, and he was no where to be seen on the grid!! So how does that work then?

Lost what the show was about years ago really, when you look back to it back in the 1990s When they used to host rally specials! and test drive cars that we would buy.

There was some uproar online about some car show, which happen to bin off a Ford mk2 escort, by hitting a massive bolder. Rolling Eyes
Car programs really shouldn't be about screwing and destroying cars, it should be about the motorsport, and what the average person would buy, or even do what mark evans, and edd and his pal do.

WELL SAID PROCTA exactly right Thumbs Up

Even though it was all staged they did put them through their paces over the rough stuff. Some of the air time that they managed was impressive.

However the air time did break them. The Volvo was proper fooked, and the footage of the velar heading towards the house at the end showed it dragging its underbelly along the ground too, most probably when it went through the river too quickly.

Ok don't want to be too controversial here, but I have enjoyed the last series of top gear. It's all complete nonsense, but compared to the other c**p on TV I liked it...

Staged? Rolling with laughter
Of course it’s staged, it’s not Which magazine. Rolling Eyes
TG was never about the cars since William Wollard, but at least with Clarkson & co it came across as natural (scripted) chemistry between them, that’s what makes them good presenters.
Oh and I do enjoy the GT as it’s just escapist fun, think men behaving badly with cars/boats/tanks. Yes it’s also staged/scripted. 2015 90 XS SW Bowler

Everything on tv is staged and it takes ages to film a very short scene even if only to get all the different camera angles using a limited number of cameras. However fast they appear to be driving on their famous races they are always behind the crews Range Rover so the reality is whether its an Aston or a Mini they will arrive at the same (planned ) time!
