I appreciate the key is not 'good' but I thought they had an immobiliser chip built in as well- is that wrong? 2000 TD5 Disco II, front and rear winches, 2" lift, ARB bumper etc.etc. --

They are exceptionally easy to open without the key, once open it is very easy to overcome the factory immobiliser and start the engine. If it has a battery backed sounder it takes a few minutes longer but isn't much harder. Say 10 minutes with a BBUS and perhaps 5 minutes without.
Your steering lock probably adds a minute or two. There are so many threads on improving security already on Def2 that there's really no point repeating them here, but a standard Puma is not secure in any sense of the word. |

Thanks black wolf, I'm not looking for a rehash of what security could be added etc. just questioning how goos factory standard is or isn't, and whether all Puma's had immobilisers or not.

Approaches vary widely re Security... from the 'what will be will be' school of thought to the realisation that 'it really isn't that difficult to either unbolt stuff or drive it away, so I had better do something to improve my chances'...(school of thought ). The Land Rover has lived through a time when it really wasn't an issue and most were effectively used with an open door policy to where we are now, with both a high profile end of life 'warm and fuzzy feeling' surrounding the Defender and vehicles now commanding unimagined prices...all this has drawn in the thieves who aim to prosper from the apparent easy pickings offered by Defenders. So plenty on D2N to read through, and you must decide where you want to be on 'the spectrum'... Many have decided that as Land Rover really only gave Defender Security 'an afternoons work', they must take it to a more Secure state. The other issue is that on approaching a Defender the assumption is (more or less) that they are all poor, and present this easy target...make it non-standard, make it difficult, make it loud, oh and track it if all else fails and you can at least feel that you have made a good attempt to hang on to it... especially as they aren't making any more and who knows we all may just be driving round in the best that there may be... The consensus is to apply layers, if in their own right they work, the more the better, some passive (they are just there working) and some active (you have to deploy them). To answer your question... The Key (actually Fob) 'hand shakes' with an induction loop around the ignition barrel, in theory No Fob No Ignition but do not rely on this... The immobiliser is very basic and will probably cause you more trouble with failing-to-start issues that it will cause a would-be thief.
All modern cars incorporate a massive vulnerability in the form of the OBD port. |

The actual key doesn't have a chip at all. The chip is in the plip (alarm remote), which dates from the mid 90's. My 20 year old Rover Mini uses the same plip - to give you an idea how modern it is.
They both help, but at the end of the day you've got a 45 year old ignition switch, with a 25 year old alarm system. |

it's probably quite safe against someone looking to steal it armed with nothing more than a bags of chips and beef pie but if you're thinking it's safe against a targeted attack then all I can say is I hope you don't learn otherwise the hard way.
do all you can within reason if you're keen to hang onto it. |

This is a subject I have spent a lot of time looking at and spending a few too many hundreds of pounds on thieves with add ons is very objectionable. The long and the short of it is no matter how much you do the scumbags just need to pull up with a low loader and lifting strap and they are away. Alas it seems a cross we have to bare for having excellent taste in vehicles! Grouse2 |

Layers of good security is the key and as suggested earlier in this thread the more security that you have the harder it will be to for some lowlife scumbag to try and take from you
One of my favourite security layers which I think has got to be one of the best visual deterrents is to remove the steering wheel via a quick release boss! I put my wheel in a backpack which makes it easier to carry about with me! I think all you can do is add layers of security, enough to deter the theif to go to the next Defender with less layers. It's sad we have to, but it's just how it is. Do what you can but still enjoy it!
