If your stuck in first gear (how to with pics)
I know it’s been talked about on here, but no photos exist in the threads,
I’ve just had a 59 reg 90 brought in on a recovery truck, which is well and truly stuck in first gear.

Remove gear stick, and hi low levers,
Remove the 4x bolts holding the alloy gear stick housing and pull to one side.

Remove the black plastic tunnel held in with TX27 screws,
Then you will see the two Detent plugs, one horizontal, one vertical.

Gently tap out the vertical one, being careful not to drop the spring or ball bearing.

Jack up the N/S front wheel, then insert a flat screwdriver and gently move the selector rail towards the front of the box,
You should feel it go, then check on the front wheel to see if you have hit neutral.

Refit detent plug (superseded ones are avalible)

Very useful, Ian, thanks for posting! Thumbs Up

In the photos it looks to me as though it is the vertical detent that you've removed though.

It’s a half hour job,
Not sure what it would cost at a dealership?

Apparently there there is an official LR repair kit for this now,
Which requires the box to be split.

At least this would get you out of trouble! Wink 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Thanks, Ian! Thumbs Up

I hope I never need it but will be very useful if I do.

Does this affect any particular Defenders? James

Excellent Ian, can prove invaluable if anyone should need it. Thumbs Up

Correct me if I'm wrong but surely the best way of avoiding this happening is not the leave it in gear full stop except for a situation where maybe for safety's sake you have to put it in gear. I.e. Parking on steep hills etc.

I suppose where you have to park at home regularly can have a bearing on it though, my parking place is perfectly flat but not everyone has the same. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Thank god for Defender2.Net and thanks to ian series 1 for his write up!

I had exactly this problem to day. Have the truck up on ramps so I could fit some new side steps more easily. Put it in first for a bit more security (never like relying on the hand brake when I'm underneath!) . Finished the job and tried to mover her off and stuck in first! Really strange as it's never don that before.

Anyway followed ian series 1's instructions and she's got a gearbox again! Thanks fella!

I must say its a pain getting the tunnel and carpets off but well worth it as while I was there I took the opportunity to clean and re-grease everything down there.

Really useful thread, thank you

Just to say that today the cheapest I can find from 'usual suspects' in UK (LR direct, Britcar, Craddock etc) is £102 plus postage

However FleaBay have the same thing from Poland for £47.76 including postage Very Happy 2011 2.4 White 110 CSW LHD
