So anyway, couple of questions, 10 plate is 2011my as is 60? (I've only owned old cars).

Check the price of the tax disc, 2010 XS CSW will be £400+, the 2011 is reclassified as a commercial so is about £200. A 10 plate will be a 2010 model as will some 60 plates as (IIRC) 2011 model wasn't released until September.

Are their prices reasonable?

They sound a bit steep to me, I'd go for a new one, I bought new last September and paid the same as I was being offered 6-12 month old used at.

Beat them down on price face to face, then walk away saying you'll think about it. Don't ring - let them ring you and you'll get some more out of them

The LR website does show that at least for the hardtop the price at the dealers is a little high. why would that be?

May as well just order from new, I can handle the wait.

I'll be over there again in a couple of weeks, can bet it's/they are still sitting there.

I got a 10% discount on my new 90 from Stratstone just for asking couldnt find a nearly new one or internet purchase cheaper I saw loads of demos for more than I paid, also forced the GAP insurance down to 50% of the original quote I got off the dealer from the same dealer an overall saving of £3k just for trying it on. I went in in scruffy cloths and started by asking for a base model van then asked for some upgrades ended up with a new 11 reg XS I then avoided the extra 2.5% tax as I ordered before 31st Dec and took delivery just before the end of March saved £3500 in total

My advice would be try it on at a reputable dealers

The reason forecourt cars are more is the supply of 2nd hand defenders is low and demand high.

Tbh if I was going to buy one I would just buy new...difference won't be massive Mike

If you can get a pre-reg one that was just used by a salesman with silly miles on it, it will be a tad cheaper than a new one and you won't have to wait months for it Thumbs Up

A client of mine ordered a new Audi, it had the wrong seats in it so they rejected it and have to wait months for another. The one they were going to but is now sitting in the showroom for 3K less than they were going to pay for it Rolling Eyes They would have taken it if they had known it was going to come up that cheap but they are committed to a new one, deposit paid etc.

They messed up by not haggling hard enough on the new price and that is the main factor in all of this - how well you can haggle. I don't think it is as easy as it was two years, I managed to get a fortune off her new one then, she should have let me do the haggling again Rolling Eyes spur of the moment thing and she was pulled in by the salesmans patter - she can afford so is not bothered Thumbs Up

I'm guessing you probably traded yours in Mike so the price you got would have been muddied with the deal on your new one BUT you are right, used ones, especially Discoveries are fetching more money than in the recession 2 ish years ago apparently Shocked

No the trade in didnt affect the new car price as i get employee discount - which is higher discount than you will get at max haggling Thumbs Up

They werent originally taking my defender, it was a after a week or so of doing the range rover deal we decided to sell it to them, so it was purely them taking off our hands Thumbs Up

But then i did get employee discount on the previous defender, but in 08 it wasnt as good. Incidentally it only took them 2 weeks to sell my defender and a further 1.5weeks to wait for DVLA to sort the reg transfer! Mike

Yes the salesman did mention demand, I think as advised above I may just make an offer, haggle for any extras, and if they baulk then just walk away.

As for insurance I will just try to get the best cover I can, it will sting as I only have 1 years NCB but peace of mind for the first year as I settle into Landrover ownership.

Still cannot decide on XS or utility, I will hardly ever need 4 seats and the load space of the van would be immensely useful, but I really wanted things like AC, a radio, the heated seats etc.

Someone mentioned removing the rear seats from an XS on another thread so that could be a happy compromise.
