Over the past six weeks or so, the 110 has been making a whining noise from the front of the engine, most noticeable in front of the radiator.
It only happens on the first start of the day and becomes intermittent then stops after about 120 seconds. The time has been a little less when the weather has been slightly warmer. It's like a low horn noise. Any ideas? Thanks, Doublea https://1drv.ms/v/s!Ar-D0Wz_PaxDkk9Urgv3QexGfIu9 PS not sure of the best way to post videos, hopefully this works. Possibly a loose or worn serpentine belt. Often screech at startup.

Also check the tensioner arm and the pulleys (and their bearings). The normal service interval of the serpentine belt is around 60k miles so at 29k miles, it shouldn't be loose and or worn. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

Showed the video to the mechanic when the 110 was in for end of warranty check - he reckoned it was the viscous fan was at fault. Current Steeds:

I done mine at 60k.
Mine slipped on start up occasionally in cold weather, causing a small screech. Since changing the belt it's perfect now. Any chance any oil or slippery substance has contaminated the mating surfaces? I guess it's hard to tell though. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

The viscous fan coupling was replaced last March under warranty. By then the weather warned up and the noise was gone.
With the recent colder weather, the low horn noise has returned, so it wasn't the fan. Given that it goes away within a few minutes of start, could it be the water pump, which is warmed fairly quickly by the engine firing? It could be the bearing but typically it's belt slip, after a short time the belt its self would warm I would have thought and grip more and thus noise gone.
I would change the seppentine belt, they are not hard to change no special tools needed at all. Just be careful of fingers with tensioner that's about all. Then you could rule it out if not, for little cost. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |
