Britpart Aluminium Ladder - DA3073
Hello folks,

Does anybody have one of these aluminium rear ladders fitted? On the face of it, they look pretty good but I can't find any detail about how the top is fixed to the body. It doesn't appear to be bolted but then also doesn't look like it hooks over the gutter Confused

LRA, have not seen this ladder in real life.

Normally there is a clamp on to the rain gutter which in that photo appears to be missing and there does not appear to have any holes for bolting it through top bodywork.

Conclusion? Either a pre production photograph or it is designed to hook over the gutter and be braced with the bottom two bolts. Am not sure I like that idea.

Other comment it appears to be parallel ladder. Now as that does not go around the number plate I would question if that is the correct design.

Have a look at Patriot ladders HERE They all appear to go around the number plate so I am guessing that is a legal requirement.

Thanks Brendan, I didn't realise that Patriot made a gutter to chassis version. Twice the price but does look pretty good.

I've since found a description on an eBay ad that says the Britpart one does hook over the gutter but may need drilling through to secure, which is what I'm trying to avoid Rolling Eyes Darren

I have a similar style ladder but made from galv steel which just hangs off the gutter, the bottom is bolted sharing the bolts between the rear body and crossmember, that prevents it from rising up and falling off the gutter Thumbs Up

Yeah, I had one of those, too. I just couldn't see what the top arrangement was in any pictures of the Britpart one. Darren

Mine hooks over the gutter and bolts into the rear crossmember at the bottom. I sat it on a bit of foam at the top to stop any vibrations etc.
There is a small amount of movement at the top when there is no one on it, but it is solid when climbing up.

That looks like the type I've had before, also mentioned by mrd1990 above. The top of the Britpart one looks quite different as it appears to sit above the gutter.

Hmm, thanks but that's not really the same thing as it still requires the body to be drilled.

Oh well, the Patriot one is probably a better solution in the long run. Thanks, all. Darren

What if I told you that would get you an MOT fail:

With more and more ANPR cameras around I'm sure that MOT testers take even more notice of partially obstructed registration plates. An obscured plate will trigger an alert if the ANPR camera cannot read the number. Defender 90XS SW

I don't know the regulations in the UK but here in the Netherlands it's viewed subjectively. There must be an unobstructed view but the viewing angels aren't exactly defined.

I always pass the MOT but have been pulled to the side twice by the police. No tickets though so no harm no foul Laughing a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

I am sure that Paul at Hogarth Engineering has been making the Patriot ladders for long enough to know that they are legal.

I can not say the same for that Britpart ladder which is a parallel ladder which cuts across the rear number plate. That ladder would be fine on the offside of a UK vehicle.

The n/s Patriot ladder goes around the standard Defender number plate.

Conclusion?

Either not the correct Patriot or other make of ladder, something else obstructing the number plate or a MOT tester who does not know the regulations! Take your pick.

MOT testers manual section 6.3 and it is an obstruction if can not read number plate from about 20 metres away.

Cannot the numberplate be moved to the other side?
