Been thinking of getting one of those hitches, where did you buy it from?

Zagato,

Does that fit to the factory fit hitch ? The drop plate piece I mean or is it a complete replacement for the factory fit , asking as I did want that fitted but the defender they found me already had a factory fit on and having read today in some past postings on here that I will need to drop the hitch lower for a caravan it leaves me with a bit of a problem

Sorry if this doesn't make complete sense but I hope you get the just of what I am asking.

Cheers Barry

Barry, the factory fit hitches are fine for towing a caravan and are a sight more secure than the dixon bate type. Remember that there are different mounting holes for the Alko tow ball if you are worried about the level. Also only adjust once the landy and van are loaded to get the right height setting.

Barry I am not sure if the adjustable will bolt straight on to a fixed. Fekete may have the best solution as you can just buy the adjustable part. I don't know whether it will bolt straight onto your supporting chassis arms but I would think it would Thumbs Up Give a supplier a call to check...

EDIT

Looks good and low enough looking at Lorrymans - the adjustable is really useful if you are swapping tow hooks e.g. I still have a Nato hitch on an adjustable plate which is why i got mine - just used to them and know they are low enough but Lorrymans looks a simpler solution and as he says is more secure Thumbs Up

Thanks Fekete,

So I just take off the tow ball, bolt this to the plate that the ball came off and then re attach the ball ? is that right ?

Sorry if these are really basic questions

Cheers Zagato.

Thanks Fekete,

Sounds good although I do worry about it not being LR , my insurance company added 10% just for none manufacturer tints on the windows (I need to change next year , reviewing this forum there are lots of examples of insurers that get it rather then comments like "Lamp Guards , whats a lamp guard")

Lorryman100,

Thanks I will try it , just did a search on here for something and came across info that suggested they were too high but I can see from yours it looks fine. Looks similar to our van Swift Charisma 590.

I had heard that not getting it level could cause damage and potentially blow outs due to one axle taking all the weight , also we go to a site in the summer where I need to go through a ford , with the backend already down I think I would ground it.

Is the standard tow ball no good for the Alko hitch then , looks like yours has been changed ? I know the D3 removable LR one was fine so just assumed this one would be too.

Thanks everyone ! 2011 Defender XS 110 Station Wagon - Rejected

Barry, the ball sits too close to the rear cross member and will not allow the Alko hitch to connect. I would suggest going to a caravan dealer and getting a genuine Alko towball and cover like mine. Thumbs Up

I think im right in saying that any towing equipment fitted to a vehicle manufactured after 1998, must be type approved.
