mudflaps
OK so not strictly a tech question but I couldn't really think of a better alternative.
Are rear mudflaps a legal requirement?
If anybody knows the definitive answer, please.

Not in the UK. They're only compulsory on Lorries N2 (ie 7.5t) and above, classed as 'spray suppression'.

Although they stop muck being thrown up onto the inside of the rear cross member and tail lights, which will suffer from corrosion.
The standard brackets are poor, the Gywn Lewis kit makes them actually do what they're supposed to do.

(Before someone jumps on me about this not being applicable to 90's, I'm only talking about the 110 as you appear to have a 110)

Thank you for the prompt reply. I have seen the kits of which you speak. Far heavier duty than the standard Land Rover offering.

They're well worth the money. They also have plastic mud shields that fill in the gap above the mudflap so you get a proper wheel arch to contain the mud.
If you end up doing some serious off roading where they might get caught the mudflap has a quick release so you can take them off easily.

The Front kit he does repositions the flap and adds a mud shield to protect the front chassis out rigger as well as preventing the mud from being thrown up the side of your front doors.

I've got the Gwyn Lewis mud flaps and mud guards fitted to my Puma 110 and totally agree with zsd-puma they are well worth the money. Thumbs Up

With regard to the OP and his indicated location - did you buy your vehicle new? I'm assuming that if it is legally required them then they would be part of the market specific standard spec and not listed as an option in the brochure/pricelist?

No, bought it for £500, in UK, nearly 20 years ago. It is a UK market 1984 One_Ten V8 CSW.

The reason for my original question was simply because, apart from Military vehicles, I don't think I have seen a Defender 110, factory new, without rear mudflaps

Here is one I was following which does not have rear mudflaps. Not difficult to imagine how much more crap this will throw up at the one following it when driving in wet conditions. Don't like the look without mudflaps either, something really looks missing there.

Not a legal requirement in the uk, and I prefer the look without - plus ours are all working vehicles and the terrain where our Land Rovers are used they get ripped off

I got stopped by the Police once and he made a big thing about spray from the back of the 90 (which doesn't have mudflaps).... I think he was a biker or cyclist because as most of his points were about 'protecting' them.

They may not be a legal requirement, but I guess we have some sort of duty to be courteous to other road users.... (I still don't have mudflaps fitted though Rolling Eyes )

It is true MSB the spray that comes off of a defender without rear mudflaps is incredible, especially at 70mph. Something akin to this;

Took the mudflaps off mine when it was about a month old.
As for the spray behind the defender if your following at a safe distance it shouldn't be a problem.
