Discrimination is discrimination. I for one would not want to leave anything in the hands of those who think they know best for everyone else to determine what is "positive" or "negative" -- because it changes with political whim, flavour of the month or based on who screams the loudest.
I'm a big proponent of letting free market handle it. Let the governments just focus on ensuring "all men are created equal". Equal Opportunity should be the measure of a successful democracy. Equal Outcome is merely socialism in disguise -- it doesn't work and just leads to everyone having a sh*tty outcome. Edit: In terms of sex selection, I really have no opinion. As long as it is safe and people are willing to fork out their own money to do it, have at it. Heck, I didn't even know it was a thing outside of China. Does that mean I need a 110 AND 90? |

I discriminate against people that can’t spell.
If English is their first language and they haven’t got a basic grasp of it, then I just switch off. |

I thought it was going to be a thread about going to the crematorium and then changing your mind...
Seriously though, I'm happy to discriminate many times a day - "recognition and understanding of the difference between one thing and another" - I discriminate against all my pliers in favour of a hammer when I want to bang a nail into the wall, I even discriminate within my hammers and leave the rubber faced one in the drawer. |

Can you be clearer on the definitions? By positive discrimination, are we talking about job selection? I.e. all other things being equal (suitability for the role) someone with a protected characteristic would be offered the job over someone else? I think there is a place for this in some circumstances if properly managed. The key is what stage in the process the positive discrimination occurs and on what grounds it has been deemed necessary. It shouldn’t be a blanket policy.
When you say single sex selection, are we talking about jobs again? Only considering applicants of a a given gender? If so, in most cases not suitable, but there may be specific roles where it is appropriate. You may want to specifically recruit a man to be a guidance councillor for male victims of rape for example, (or vice versa) 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

Positive discrimination seems to equal politically correct discrimination and is therefore, by definition, wrong.
Single sex lists - in the context of candidates for any official post - politically correct and, therefore, wrong. In the context of potential sexual partner - fine, works whatever way you swing. |

I disagree that positive discrimination is necessarily political correctness, or fundamentally wrong. Like many things, it's how it's applied that is important. Companies have sound business, moral and social reasons for wanting to increase diversity in their workforces. In cases where they are far from achieving that diversity, positive discrimination can be an effective tool when used in conjunction with other methods of attracting non typical candidates for a job. It shouldn't be a standing policy, but used in a targeted fashion to address problem areas. It should also be clear during recruitment that it is being used.
Edited to add, I believe the name for what I am describing is positive action, not positive discrimination. (I might concede giving it a different name is political correctness!) 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS Last edited by Bluest on 9th Mar 2018 2:13pm. Edited 2 times in total |

I know it's on the rise, I think age discrimination is a bigger issue than gender personally.
But across the board it's on the rise. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

People can choose their gender...
I choose to not give a flying hoot and I'll label people as I see them. Man/Woman/Weirdo I've already had 'one of those sorts' ringing up and complaining that when she (I don't care, she was a she) entered her details in our site, the choices were Mr/Mrs/Miss. Don't get me wrong, I've got no issues with any of them, I just don't want to be told what I have to call them. Their choice/my choice. |

I often discriminate, most often about bad drivers. I often find there's only one decent driver on the road in my vicinity and that often drops to none when I'm a passenger.

I think what we are talking about is termed "positive action" and is legal. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
