Beyond 1945
I've been digesting some documentaries involving the build up and what went on during WW2 as well as the political alliances that were made at the time, however i can't find much beyond the end of the war.

I'm not just looking for tv based documentaries, but also any reading material which covers what happened after the end of the war with the distribution of Eastern Europe and the affect of Russia's hold on quite a large proprotion of it as well as the Cold War era and up to today's current political balance ( or lack of ) in Europe.

I'm not into massivily heavy reading, so something an averagely educated person can follow without too many headaches!

Any recommendations on what to read/watch?

We're planning trips through Europe in the years to come as well as beyond where we can, and i wish to arm myself with the basics of what is what in the current world and how it came to be that way.

Cheers!

You could try the appropriately-named 'Cold War' by Jeremy Isaacs and Taylor Downing.

The Cold War IS what happened post-1945 really.

The book starts by setting the scene leading up to WW2, then explains what happened next.

Easy to read, well indexed so you can find what you want, and lots of pictures.

I don't know if is currently in print.

I can certainly recommend visiting the 3 dams that the dambusters bombed and also the salt mines in Poland. Colditz is also good to visit. One thing to note is that there isn't a great deal of information about the war whilst you're actually there.

What amazed me was how little room there was to manoeuvre around the dams for bombers. How any of them got out without crashing into the surrounding woodland is amazing. Also when you visit you get an idea of the scale and just how much water would have been flowing when the dams were breached.
