Is this normal on a TD5 90 please ? (TC/ABS related)
Hi, my previous wafflings were over-complicated !

Is it normal for the abs pump to prime now and again, mainly when accelerating ? It doesn't activate abs or tc, you can just hear it doing something.

Shouldnt do. Should just activate when the ABS is being used

We thought it was a fault until we changed the abs pump and now it does the same thing but quietly in the background. Just wondering if we do have a fault or if it’s doing what wit should do. Thanks for your replies people.

In normal conditions - so dry roads etc.. they shouldnt make any noise or anything, they should act like "normal" brakes.

In snow/wet/icy/sandy conditions then the abs pump will trigger when the abs kicks in. However the abs pump shouldnt kick in if the TC kicks in. If you follow?

Pretty sure the TC uses the brakes to control wheel spin - so the pump will activate Confused 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Indeed but no pedal feedback or major noise from the pump, but when the ABS is active, you get pedal feedback and more noise. As the TC uses much less"braking pressure" than the ABS

Ive been at the pub quiz so this could be nonzense Laughing

The abs and tc works. So feedback on the pedal when you lock the brakes when braking, and tc operation when you hit the gas in the ice. What I’m talking about is normal driving on a dry road, straight line (but does it more if cornering) when you can hear the pump doing something, but no affect on vehicle. As we previously had a noisy pump it was noticeable and annoying. Now we have a new (to us) quieter pump, it still does it but quietly and less annoying apart from not knowing if it should be happening. Thanks again for replies.

Don't have experience of a TD5, but my 2.2 Puma does it occasionally . It seems to be an over sensitive sensor which will cause the ABS to prime ( slight chatter from pump). Occurs usually on a slightly bumpy road or bend. No TC light, and no fault codes. Did it more when it was new, less frequent now.

My Td5 will chatter away every so often when driving, it will often do its grumble when I'm turning at a junction in our village as there's a large inspection chamber in the road with a metal lid and it attracts the attention of the sensors when turning tight over it. I find it reassuring in that it still works and isn't broken Thumbs Up

As above on mine, tight turns on a slightly slippery/loose or uneven surface triggers it momentarily Thumbs Up

Had the light flickering yesterday under acceleration on a slushy/icy/snowy lane as you would expect, good to know it's there!

Thanks again for the replies. What got us started on this wS that the pump was really noisy, and we were a bit transfixed on stopping the noise, overlooking it might have just been a noisy pump. I have a D2 and most stuff is quieter, eg windscreen wipers. Cheers for your help.

Here’s another “Is this normal ABS/TC” question. Passed my MOT. Phew. Then about a week later ABS/TC lights come on and stay on. (Thank you Land River, for not doing that before the MOT!) But in the snow and ice the ABS still works. Not sure about the TC. Can’t really “feel” that. I had always assumed that if the warning lights came on the system would shut down completely. Obviously not, which is a good thing. Still, I’ve got 11 months to sort it out. Only joking, will get it sorted sooner than that. Don’t have Nanocpm, but I guess a faulty sensor, it usually is, particularly if the pump still activates the system.
