transfer box whine in reverse
Hi all

When reversing in low range, get a very distinct whine from what I think is the transfer box. Does not whine in forward gears, and no whine when in high range.

Vehicle is a TD5 03 plate.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Could it be the clutch? Mine does the same sometimes and I am preety sure it is the clutch. Roel

Why would a clutch whine in one direction and not the other (assuming that you're not slipping it, of course)?

More likely to be a gear-train somewhere, but I would have thought the reverse idler gear in the main box was a more likely candidate.

Unless it is a really bad whine I wouldn't worry about it, most vehicles make some gear noise going backwards.

Mine makes noise while slipping the clutch but only in reverse not when going forward. I don't understand it either but it happens. When it is not slipping anymore the noise is gone. Roel

Reverse gear has straight cut teeth which are noisy.

That is extremely weird and defies logical explanation!

Agree with Mo on this one. I also note that since having the Ashcroft HD bearings fitted to my transfer box there is generally more bearing noise than with the standard bearings.

Thanks all for thoughts. Will not panic for now and get it checked in service next month.

My transfer box whines in every forward gear above about 30! Has done for the last 30k and hasn't gotten any worse, so I elect to pretend it's fine!

^^^ My Disco 2 has now started doing this, after 200,000 miles or so. Under power or under engine braking it makes a sound reminiscent of an underground train or a milk-float accelerating. Under conditions of very light power it is quiet. This pitch of the sound is speed related.

I can't decide if it is the transfer box or the main box, but, since I have a spare transfer box, I think it is more likely to be the main gearbox!

I have found that turning up the music is the best solution for now.

Yeah similar scenario, original Transfer, and done around 205k. Gearbox was changed out 20k ago and this noise remained!

Although mine is compounded by what feels like an excessive amount of backlash under light loads/downhills on motorways. I know it's not the rear drive flanges, but I haven't figured out what it is...

Change the oil in the gearbox and transfer box.

In my case changing the oil made absolutely no difference, but it was reassuring that the correct amount of very clean oil with no metal debris came out of both the main and transfer gearboxes.

Have you tried the play in the tbox output shaft? I get a few noises as mine is worn and has a small amount of play. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html
