If the injectors have been loose and moving minutely several hundred thousand times - wouldn't you have to change the washers at their base as well?

Also, don’t thread lock the clamp bolt, or wind it down until you think its tight!😳
Would love to see him get that out in a year or two.

Thank you both for your replies.

I have to admit straight away that my knowledge of car engines comes mainly from working on petrol ones with carburettors in the 1980's. I know next to nothing about diesel engines with injectors so what you say is probably correct.

In this case I only had to drive the car in this state for about 5 miles, after which I left it at home until I could fix it. Will I still need to change the washers you mention?

If so, do you know if they are:
(a) Expensive?
(b) Available from a motor factor or will I have to go to a main dealer?

I will remove the bolt and retighten it as suggested and update the description on the video.

I have a set of washers & will do mine soon. App they are the same as D3 but cheaper??

Going to the dealer & will buy 2 new bolts just to be sure also Chris

Do not refit with thread lock!

If he'd read about this on the internet as he said he did, he'd know that the bolts are torque to yeild bolts and shouldn't be reused.

Next time he tries to unfasten it it'll shear off and be stuck in there = £££.

And yes, replace the seals, the repeated knocking will have squished and work hardened them so they don't seal properly anymore. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Thank you all for your feedback.

As a first step I have added a disclaimer in capital letters at the end of the video's description explaining what I did wrong.

When I get a moment I will add a warning at the end of the video itself too.

Sorry but I haven't found out how to edit videos yet! Crying or Very sad

When I said the engine was running quietly at the end I should really just have said that the dreadful noise had gone away! The engine has been making the sound you refer to for the last 133,000 miles! Wink

they are all noisy , I have a petrol engine in my other car that I keep forgetting to switch off as its so quiet compared to mine.

Parts are not expensive, unless your getting them from a dealer,

I use TPUK on eBay quite a lot, decent quality at a decent price Thumbs Up

I’ve just done seals and various other bits over the weekend.

I see these seals referring to in some places as ‘service item’. Which for my understand is a scheduled change at some point?

Yes it's a common issue.

A service item, just means it's a part that you replace when ever you service (ie. repair, remove) components attached to them. So if you service the injectors the washers should always be replaced. Much like you'd never bother to reuse a rocker cover gasket, if you removed the rocker cover. It doesn't mean they're a "routine service" part.

The washers are extremely expensive from Land Rover dealers, at about £20 each! You can get the same washers from a Citroen dealer for about £7 each (Citroen Relay's use the Puma engine), they're £8.50 from Ford, or about £1 each from a diesel injection specialist. They're actually matched to the Denso injectors rather than the engine, the same injectors are used in various Toyota's too.
