I do not have a Td5, but that engine has a characteristic nice sound like you mention. Try to find out what sort of engine oil was used. Puma 110" SW

They do sound a bit tinny at tickover, but one would have to hear it in the flesh to tell you if yours was FUBAR'd or not.

Hi
I am in Guildford if you wanted to pop over and compare. The TD5 being a five clyinder does have a very distinctive sound, sounds even better without the cat and centre box Mark |

Thanks Mark that might be quite useful as I have never owned a Defender before I've got no reference point. I'm in Woking so not far away. Contact e-mail is address removed from public post by admin if you want to send some contact details. Thanks

Rovertune in Reading are a dealer of mine, so could inspect the car for you, looking into the engine a little deeper than just it's sound. It may be something daft, or it may be nothing?
We had a 1999 Disco Td5 in the workshop today, that had 105k miles on it, but was as quiet as an engine with 30,000 miles. They do get noisier with age, and as previously mentioned, poor engine oil choice can make them noisy too. Regards, Gary. |

My 2005 TD5 had 10K on the clock when I bought it from a Landy dealership and it sounded then, and still does, like a large bag of very lively spanners. I heartily recommend buying the most powerful stereo you can afford.

Loud stereo installed. That's much better 200 quid's worth of Noise Killer insulation helped as well. Now for the rotten doors.

My TD5 Disco is pretty quiet both at tickover and at speed with 200k miles on the clock, with no particular rattles or tappetty noises.
My Puma sounds more like a handful of spanners in a tumble-dryer at any speed. |
