England 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Santorini Black
Clutch choice 2.4
Following the death of my engine (cam chain stretch at 110k miles) I'm having a think about what clutch to have fitted whilst the engine is out.
I'm considering genuine, OEM or Clutchfix.
All thoughts and practical experiences, good or bad, welcome.
Thanks

Well the Genuine new type seems a lot better than the early spec.

Other than that very difficult to say really, I went from the old type to the new spec. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

I think if mine fails, I will do their Auto Conversion... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

This is a really difficult question in my eyes. Lots of makes on the market, all claiming they solved the spring-problem. Mine started rattling again thousand of km ago, so having the same question in mind. Rather expensive, but sounds not too bad.... Will no longer trust the genuine one.

I don’t doubt the clutch fix supplied parts are an upgrade, however if you do I search I would be inclined to give weight to the way DG went! 👍

OK we at 4x4overlander stock the Clutchfix kit. I am not a mechanic and if I do not understand something I tend to ask questions.

The clutch that DG went for is a clutch by Sachs. That clutch is an extended life clutch made for Ford Transit 4x4 engines.

Now the flywheel on the Ford engine is a Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) and has springs inside the clutch cover to take up wear. The flywheel on the 2.4 Puma is a single mass flywheel.

Whilst the two different clutches are within millimetres the same size and I do not doubt that the Ford Transit clutch works in a 2.4 Puma and is slightly cheaper there are some serious questions to be asked.

What is the clamping force of the Sachs clutch? What differences is there in a clutch designed for a DMF being used on a single mass flywheel? Transit 2.4 engines are rarely remapped for more power/torque whilst Puma 2.4 engines are frequently remapped.

I would suggest that the use of such a clutch is a 'grey' area and would suggest caution before going down that route. Yes that route is slightly cheaper in initial purchase price but is it the best option long term?
