I would say too good to be true, it doesn’t state the full E approval number, with the new MOT rules they are trying to bring in and the fact non approved lights could invalidate your insurance I would only fit approved headlights. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html
90 V8 - Maggie http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic42564.html
110 TD5 - Buggsy http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59029.html

D3 Hse - Fiona
Capri 2l S - Anna

Think I might have a problem............

It says that they are E and DOT approved. I don’t really want to spoil it for Brendan to comment Laughing , but such a thing just does not exist. Approval is one or the other, cannot be both.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Scotland 2002 Defender 110 Td5 DCPU Baltic Blue
I bought a pair that look identical to the ones in the boxed first photo, from a different eBay seller about 6 months ago

To be honest, I am happy with them, good performance & a great upgrade from the standard units

When I fitted them and took my Defender into work to set up the adjustment on the MOT ramp
The headlight beam measuring thingy was showing the beam pattern for the sidelight parts were all over the place!!

They will fail an MOT , just depends if you can be bothered swapping standard units back in come MOT time (or if you know a tester who will throw a blind eye)

They are good value for money, look the part, and light the road up well

I doubt you would get a tug from Plod Whistle

^^^ And what do they do to oncoming traffic, and the safety of other road users if they are "all over the place"?

The sidelight beam throws slight vertical illumination

It is impossible the adjust to meet the MOT test threshold

I do accept that using these is a bit selfish

BUT.............I am yet to have somebody even flash me Thumbs Up My confidence has been writing cheques that my abilities can't cash for years.

Please zoom in on to the markings on the lens!

What do you see?

Guess what DOT, SAE E in a circle

Look at what they say

Quote:

E MARKED AND DOT APPROVED!

RHD & LHD UK and EU Spec. 100% Road Legal.

Where do I start?

100% Road Legal?? Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter They are 100% ILLEGAL as they do not have an APPROVAL mark on.

RHD & LHD UK and EU Spec. Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter To be RHD UK spec there should be an arrow on them to distinguish them from LHD EU spec. Just another legal requirement

E MARKED AND DOT APPROVED Rolling with laughter Banging Head Rolling with laughter

Well E marked? Meaningless statement as that is a country code and is missing some very vital information.

DOT APPROVED: Really? There is NO such thing as DOT APPROVED.. This just shows the ignorance of many, many sellers on sites such as E bay.

Why do I say that?

DOT stands for the US Department of Transport. The DOT is the regulatory body in the USA which sets the standards. They do not actually approve any item in the USA. The light might be DOT compliant it is certainly not DOT approved.

DOT is the regulatory framework which is recognised in N America. The headlight pattern is different to that set by the UN ECE regulations.

Now some well respected LED manufacturers making headlights are based in the USA, companies such as Vision X, Truck-Lite, J W Speaker which sells lights in the UK.

Guess what the headlights all three companies sell in Europe do not carry a DOT marking? I wonder why?? It would be much simpler for those companies to have one headlights, for RHD, USA, and most of Europe. However they have 2 one DOT compliant for N America and one with full UN ECE approved headlight for RHD Europe.

Yes cheap and illegal!

Caterham, the chances are that they are NOT EMC compliant so would cause interference to radio etc.
