Information & Advice regarding performance upgrades
Hi All,
I have a 1 yr old 90 XS. At some point in the future, when my 3 yr warranty is up, I intend to get an ECU remap but in the meantime " What can I do that would NOT invalidate the LR warranty ? "

OK, I know I could use something like the BAS remap and re-install the original LR map when visiting the dealer, BUT for that you need a laptop running Windows [ I don't have a laptop and run only Apple OS's ] also you would have to take the laptop on holiday/long trips incase you are forced to visit a dealer to sort out a problem under warranty etc: just in case they decide to plug in their diagnostic computer.

What about these Diesel Boxes that plug between the ECU and Engine which, apparently, change various parameters to tune the engine to European fuel/environment rather than the generic All World tune when the ECU/Engine leaves the factory?

A friend has one of these boxes from an Italian company for his Nissan and swears by it. Increased torque, acceleration, improved fuel economy [ when driven correctly]. Has anyone on the Forum any experience of these? Bow down Bow down

I had the box way before the tuning was advertised, so I had not cared to replaced with a proper remap. It runs very well and torque increase starts at same rpms as the original map. No smoke whatsoever. I think it is a good choice if you do not want a state of the art remap. Puma 110" SW

Hi

The BAS box only needs a pc for setting up the tool, its not needed for swapping the tune on and offonce its set up.
You could use Bootcamp with windows on your MAC for setting up the tool for the first time.

I personally would stay away from generic tuning boxes as the majority just fool the ECU into putting more fuel into the cylinder (there is more too it, but in general that's what they do!). If you where to do a search you will find the vast majority of owners with a remap will have gone for a personal remap for their landy

Where as a personal remap made especially for your landy gets everything working in sync. There are several reputable dealers who supply a remap with there own version of the Alien tech remap interface to allow their remap files to be put into your landies ECU. When I got mine I looked at three dealers, BAS, IRB and Alive tuning. In the end I went with Alive tunings ATRIC system, so all I can comment on is my experience with Alive. The way it worked out was that I was sent the remap interface unit and I had to plug it into the OBDII socket on the landy and download the standard engine map from the landy into the interface unit. It then was just a case of unplugging it and connecting it up to the PC and downloading the original map file. I then emailed that off to Alive and within 30 mins I got the original file plus three remaps emailed to me. I then installed 2 of the remap files into the interface unit ( it holds three maps, the original plus two remap files) and went out to the landy and plugged it in. Everything is explained on the interface unit about what you want to do and how to do it in a step by step process. You then upload your new remap and unplug the interface unit and presto, you now have a tuned landy. I leave the interface unit in the landy in my nakatanenga safe so I always have it incase something happens and the landy needs to be put back to standard (no pc needed), which takes about 10 mins. As Pete said earlier you only need a pc to upload the map files onto the interface unit as they are stored within it. Not only does it do the remaps but it also reads and clears DTC's.

Here is a picture of the ATRIC interface unit I received from Alive tuning:

And this is the PC interface screen:

There has been a lot off hot collars and bitching on who makes the best product http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic5548.html, but you can do a search and you will find that Alive tuning, BAS and IRB have all got a good name for remaps Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the information gentlemen. The problem with the Full remap, as I see it, is as follows:-
1. I would need to beg, borrow or steel a copy of Windows OS in order to run the remap software initially.
2. Difficult, but not impossible, to set up my desktop Mac outside for access to my Defender.
3. I can revert to the original Land Rover ECU Map from the Remap reasonably quickly but have to carry the Remap Box with me .

IF for some reason I develop an ECU fault that stops me from reverting from the Performance Remap to the original then I will lose my warranty.

With the Diesel Box it is a straightforward mechanical plug in plug out.

I think I will wait until my warranty is over and then get a full remap done by a company with No involvement of my computer skills.

Strangely enough I also only use Macs WelshGas (designer by profession and have been using them since 1998, long before they were 'cool'). If you want to come and drive mine to see what its like just drop me a line. I had a professional remap done on an Alfa Spider 2 years ago - if anything it was not as smooth as this box!

Hi Welshgas,

Might be worth giving the Alive / BAS / IRB chaps a call and seeing if they can propose a solution....

I'm sure I've read somewhere that one of them, if not all, may offer some form of ECU reprogramming or replacement that can hold two states of tune that you simply switch between without the need to hook any bit of kit up to it....

Worth giving them all a shout in due course I reckon Thumbs Up but I do understand your concerns regarding warranty etc. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

I can highly recommend Pete from BAS, got his remap last summer and it worked great. The fact that I could retune it to original worked wondereds with the 6 warranty callbacks I had at the dealer. They never could tell the engine had been mapped (well the warranty was on non engine matters really, but they did read the ecu and couldnot tell).

I then found out more about the EGR mod that Pete offered he replied quickly to my several emails and even called me to explain everything in basic non tech language. The new version is even better than before, drives more like a car and with more power, response and infact mpg!!! I can tell as I have a scanguage 2.

Big thumbs up, just wish I hade the £££ for the v6 conversion he does. 110 Black Java Puma Utility, Kenlowe fan, bullbar, sides step, tinted windows, bluetoth, Scanguage, BAS,
