If you like the sound then surely pipes sticking out of the side just a metre behind the driver's window is the perfect spot. Listen to the rumble all day long. I know I would and actually have wondered about doing it on the DC. Pimp I know, but who cares....apart from pedestrians blasted on the pavement Whistle Monsieur Le Grenadier

I thought this would create a controversial discussion.

The front indicators really are symbolic. They illustrate how much effort MB have put into maintaining the old appearance for no other reason than the image in conjures up in the customer´s mind.

In addition to the indicators and tail-lights, there are the seventies style rub strip with chrome insert (looks like cheap boat builder fare to me) and the door hinges which peak out of the door shut-lines. Exposing them like that has absolutely no purpose whatsoever, other than to remind of the previous model. They probably caused heated discussions with the type approval officials concerning pedestrian injury, and encourage corrosion issues to boot.
Like Jeep, MB has to be applauded for going the difficult route. Designing the new workhorse to look like it was done by the old team, for the same reasons and purposes as the old one was conceived. Even the wheel to body proportion is old school.

The majority of the industry (including MB) is churning out fashion statements that are only designed to stay relevant until they reach their sell by date, four years down the line.

What does all this mean for our beloved Defender?

In my view it offers many more historic references for the designers to build on than the G-Model, and was always more attractive to look at. Better proportions. The position of lights and features, like on a 1920´s Bentley or a Supermarine Spitfire, were where they should be. Functional, but good looking.

Old school engineering rightness.

The build quality was atrocious, and the wobbly flat panels and corrosion inducing open-edged tub cappings were symbolic of that fact.
We don´t need that again!

It is this "engineering rightness" that has to appear in the new Defender. Mr McGovern, I do hope you´ve designed the soon to released new Defender as if it was creating by a group BBC English speaking gentlemen using ship´s curves and pantograph aided drawing boards.

It should however use all the modern production technology, of which JLR has plenty. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

I'm a big fan of the wing top indicators, they are quite a handy visual reference when off road.

To use the term "modernises a legend" somehow throws the gauntlet back at LR. I really don't want to see another mummy land rover product, even more so for a defender replacement. Like it or not, i think what Mercedes has done here is to be commended.
