OME steering damper question
Sorry, another question.

i opted for a OME this time.

It only came with 2 x washer cups.
The last ones had 4 (2 either side of each of the rubber bits).
Is this correct or do I need to re-use 2 of the old ones?

Anyway, a picture paints a 1000 words...

I suspect the old washers will not fit correctly with the new bushes.
Have a look if there is a difference in bush diameter where it fits through the mounting hole. Cheers,

cheers Kyle - after 3 days of constant raining it's finally dry so I'm about to give it a go.

I was going to work on ours too Andy but it hit 43+ just on lunch time so gave up and hid inside with the air conditioner. Cheers,

ha, very nice.

Well i'm now about to smash the thing to bits and give up!

The rubbers on the OME do indeed fit neatly into the chassis brackets - so, no washer cups required i guess.

However, back to the other end on the drag link bracket and i can't even get the damper into the bracket - the metal part of the bush is just too wide Big Cry

I thought I'd be clever and squeeze the metal part of the bush with a vice but it's just too big still.
Anyway with all this mucking about, the bush has now popped out completely and I need to get it back in again!

So, the Terrafirma goes in no problem but has a few mm slack at the drag link bracket and the OME doesn't even fit!
Once I get the bush back in maybe I can file the metal part down a bit...
20 minute job now becoming a major project Laughing Cheers,

I had the same problem fitting mine and had to file the metal bush insert.

A little frustrating but once I realised I had to do it it didn't take long.

Very pleased with how it performs. Notable improvement.

Good to hear the chassis end rubbers where correct.
I've found there is no such thing as a 20 min job on our Defender, I feel your pain as every job has proved harder than needed.
If you file the other inner tube down go slow and steady to get a good fit. Cheers,

Yep, this has definitely been upgraded to 'major project' as I've now managed to stuff up the bush for the OME damper.
The Terrafirma one is now back on but with a ridiculous amount of play in the bracket at the drag link end - just doesn't feel right - pretty sure the fit of my last TF one on my old Defender was all nice and snug.
One extreme to the other, OME too big, TF too small.
Anyway, I've ordered up a new bush for the OME and if necessary I'll file it down rather than try to compress it... Cheers,

Project update.....

Managed to get the OME bush back in and ground a bit off the inner steel tube last night so it now fits the drag link bracket.
Fitted the OME damper today and I've just given it a short test drive - all smooth and I'm happy.

Oh, and ARB got back to me to answer my original question - no need to re-use any of the original cup washers - it's intended only to use the 2 that come with the damper.

The history to this is that I was getting a slight death wobble between 55 and 70 which turned out to be a combo of damper, swivels and wheel balancing.
The original damper was a bit passed it and I replaced it with the TF one because that's what was on my old Defender and worked perfectly on that.

@nitram17 - i ordered it off eBay - steering damper bush kit or something like that - it was only a few quid and i figured if in the likely event it didn't fit i wouldn't have lost much - no longer required anyway.

I installed an OME steering damper on our 110 three weeks ago without any difficulties, it was a quickie after struggling with a steering joint.
Difference compared to the original LR damper was negligeable, but when finishing I noticed some play in the bearings, an issue to be solved shortly.

I am taking the liberty to add directly to this old thread as it recently helped me identifying the culprit of an irregular and mysterious "click … click ...click.." type of noise which may be relevant to others. So here it goes.

Last summer, driving on mountain tracks with the windows open and enjoying the fresh air, I kept hearing annoying metallic "clicks" coming from under the 110 which was ruining part of the experience. Those clicks were in no way speed related, gear related, engine rev related, etc... But somehow to a certain extend related to the terrain. Once back home, I did jack up the front and put it on axle stands to check for play in the steering components, ball joints and bushes. I also checked for play on wheel and swivel bearings. Nothing. While it continued to make the noise intermittently, autumn/winter came along and I rolled up the windows and forgot about it.

More recently, while searching for something totally unrelated on this forum I came upon this thread, and specially on this eyes opener part :

So I went under the car, and bingo, I have a Terrafirma TF832 steering damper (fitted by the previous owner) and there is a noticeable slack at the draggling bracket, and when I shake it, it does produce the infamous click sound I had been hearing.
I replaced with an Old Man Emu steering damper, which indeed required the metal part of the bush to be filed to fit in the bracket, which actually ensures it does not move, and I'm happy with that. The feeling behind the wheel is amazingly improved an every thing seems more solid as well.

A picture of the bolt that was securing the Terrafirma steering damper to the draglink, showing wear after less than 2000km, this is not right.
