Hello folks,
I recently discovered that the base of my battery box is rustier than I thought it was. Basically, one of the 'pockets' on the underside crumbled to dust! It's probably something that I can repair with a bit of ingenuity, but then I came across the battery box kit by YRM and I began to wonder if it'd be easier to replace it.  Has anybody used this kit? If so, is it practical to fit without dismantling half the vehicle? I'm not doing a strip down rebuild here, so if I were to go this route then it'd have to be fitted in-situ. Interested in any responses to this thread. I can fit my hand through the holes in mine
 Seriously worried the battery's gonna drop out into the road 
I also came across the same YRM kit and was wondering what is involved in fitting it. Planning to do full stripdown and chassis replacement in the summer so was going to address it then  Matt.

Dont think you will manage it without at least taking seats, front floor, gearbox tunnel and seatbox out as it sits above the chassis rail.
Other than that its only 30min with a good drill bit to get old spotwelds out and a few pop rivets. Worth doing the end panels too if you are going to the trouble too as they often crumble. Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

I would think even if you had to take the whole seat box out to do it, it's still less than a day's work.

Thanks, chaps. Info on Retroanaconda's link suggests that it can be done with the seat box in place, which is encouraging. I think I'll have a poke around and get a better idea of how far gone the original is and then decide if it warrants full replacement. Darren

my dad used YRMs kit,
My dad removed the seatbox, as he needed to replace the two outer side panels and ended up repairing the two panels on the rear tub, that the seat box bolts on too. What we did was assemble their kit 1st before we went at his old unit, so we knew what why and when, before hand. it went together with out any bother at all, what we did was use some of this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00DHL...&psc=1 and a long with some rivets and I tell you what its best piece of work me and my dad did together since the rover metro days. the sealant acts like a water proof seal on the joins etc. We used the same stuff to on the side panels too, along with rivets. then used what was left to seal off any other daft holes. id recommend you take the box out, as you never know what other night mares you will hit sadly. like my dad did. THREAD RESURRECTION!
How did you get on with fitting the battery box LRA? Who else has done this replacement? None of the replacement items are actually accurate, as this eBay link to a Genuine one shows: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NOS-GENUINE-LAN...0008.m2219 The replacements do not appear to include the small "box" at the rear LHS, nor the slatted drain holes and little boxes at the bottom. However, I'm not prepared to pay £350.00 for the Genuine one! Has anyone found a source for more accurate repro's of the battery box? |

I recently fitted the ally aftermarket version to my '84 Ninety. I initially looked at genuine but couldn't stomach the price. I fitted it with the seatbox in situ. Fiddly more than difficult. Pics on my thread here: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56071-75.html Only other thought is to try and find a decent used seatbox and cut the battery tray out of that as you can get a whole seatbox for the same price as a new ally battery box on ebay. If doing that you'd have to take out your seatbox to fit the new/used box as it would be in one piece. Hope that makes sense  Instagram: l90andy

Will keep a lookout for a complete seatbox within sensible collection distance. Other than that, a bit of fabrication and welding may be called for. |

I didn't replace the battery box on mine, in the end. I just replaced the rusty 'pocket' with an alloy project box that I fettled to fit:
