Removal of upper and lower steering column shrouds
This evening the headlights on my Defender gave up the ghost, first the dip then main. Fuses ok so I suspect the usual, faulty lighting switch and/or dip/main beam switch. I’ve tried to take off the upper and lower plastic shrouds to get access to the switches. I’ve unscrewed the 4 pozi and 2 torx screws holding them together and to the base of the steering column but I can’t see any way of getting them off without removing the steering wheel, am I correct in my thinking or is there another way?

Just take the steering wheel off. It's only a single nut. Just make sure your wheels are straight ahead and mark the wheel and column so it goes back in the same place.

The job is so much easier with the wheel out of the way and it's mad to try and work around it when it's so easy to remove. If we were talking about a Range Rover with an airbag and various steering wheel controls then it might be different. But it's pull the centre pad off, loosen the nut and yank/wobble the wheel loose then take the nut off and remove the wheel. Job done.

Right, got the wheel off, shrouds off, switched on all works!!! Only thing I can think is I disturbed something when I had the dash off to do my wipers, but that was several months and several thousand miles ago so.....?

Anyway, waggled all the wires round the switches, checked connectors, alls well so carefully reassembled and they still work so another Defender mystery!

This is normally the switch playing up.
It takes all the current for the lights so if the contacts are poor it can overheat.
If it plays up again have a look at the contacts in the back of the switch.
The plastic starts to melt and the contacts sink in or get insulated by the plastic.
The long term fix is a boomslang loom that takes the current draw from the battery and only uses the switch to activate relays.
The dim dip relay can also cause issues and is best bypassed if still fitted.
Hope your lights stay on although Tesco’s on Christmas eve doesn’t sound like fun! Defender Td5 Commercial 2002

Hi Baz,

Looks like I spoke too soon! Set off for Tescos dipped beam on. Did the Xmas scrummage, got in the car, no dipped headlights! My son had a similar problem on his 300 tdi 90 his headlights would only work if he held back the dim/dip stalk in flash position, turned out to be the master switch. But what I don’t understand is why main works and not dip, surely the master light switch sends headlight 12v to the dip/main beam switch which then sends it to either the dip or main filament?

Externally my switches look fine no sign of melting or scorching.

Looks like another strip down Big Cry I will need to get the lights sorted for a trip up to Scotland in early January so will have to put off the boomslang mod till I get back, will just get a new master switch in the meantime.

I had this happen to me a while back. Turned out to be a burnt out relay.

I understand that, as standard, the only relay, unless you have dim dip (I don’t), is the power on relay which energises the headlamp supply when the “ignition” is turned on. This is ok in my case as I’m still getting power to the main beam. Pretty sure the problem is either the master lighting switch or the dip/main stalk. I’m going to replace the main switch first, then if this doesn’t sort the problem the dip/main stalk. And, shortly after that fit a Boomslang loom.

Yep, think you might be right, I’m going down the “replace the cheapest part first” route then it should all be in good condition for the Boomslang next month. 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black.
