Big problem
Am hoping someone can help. Were in Spain om way to morocco.

When rmthe vehicle is hot and under load there is drastic power loss every 2 seconds . It's worst going up hills. Stop abd let it cool for ten mins and it's then ok for about 20 mins then does it again the engine stays on so it's not ignition related and the diagnostic us showing no faults

Anyone any ideas? Seems electrical or electronic to me so can someone please also tell me how to reset the ecu? Any help would be great

sorry to hear about your problem. i have no idea as such on a defender but i had similar problem some time ago when hot under load and it was fuel starvation.

just a thought.

Not good Mike,,

Does sound like fuel related (under load, and up hill)

Presuming the temp gauge is reading normal ?? California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

All I can suggest is the basics:

Fuel filter, spray some contact cleaner in the ECU plug, the fuel rail plug, the throttle potentiometer plug and the MAF plug. And also check the wiring on those.

With the temp going up though I'd look at the cooling mainly - is your radiator full of mud and dust? Is it obstructed by your bumper? Does having the heater inside on full blast make a difference? Is the system pressurising? Is there an airlock? Enough coolant?

Is the turbo on a Tdci water cooled? Have you had a remap?

Cheers guys. Seems it was fuel related and is pretty much ok now. Having said that (Andrew) there is also the possibility of radiator as it got better into the night. Plate is on the front attached to the fairlead, might remove it in a bit. However, the temperature gauge never moved and there are no fault codes?

The temp gauge does not move up from the middle position between ca. 85 and 110ºC or so. Can u check the actual temp while driving? Puma 110" SW

The standard Land Rover temperature gauge is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

Coolant boils at between 106-120C dependent on concentration and pressure. The standard Land Rover temp gauge does not shift from normal position until 96C has been reached.

On our overland vehicle we have an Engine watchdog fitted. I have set mine to give an audible alarm at 96C well below the boiling point of plain water under normal pressure. It has saved us from a serious problem once when I had a pinhole rubbed into top of rad. It rarely triggers and if it does I just watch the world go by for 20 minutes.

Will be fitting one to the Puma as well.

Sorry Mike can not help you with your particular problems.

Hi Mike,

How hot is it where you are driving?

I wonder how hot your intake temperature is getting to ? ( not engine temp ) There maybe something in the ecu which reduces power if the temp gets too hot.

Just another thought.
