There is an excellent video up at the moment on the TRF page on Facebook regarding Salisbury plain.
Guide, to the rights and wrongs of using the area recreationally. Seems like the bikers are the ones causing the most issues there illegally. (At the moment.) I also learnt that when the flags were up in the dark there were lights for at night also, never noticed or knew that. I would post the video here but it won't work sadly as it's not a YouTube video. Ah, so a sign that says "danger, keep out" means it's dangerous, keep out! I'm glad we've cleared that up!
Not daft, these Lieutenant Colonels! |

Not just bikes.... 4x4's and 4x2's
And dog walkers.... they seemingly are allowed to drive and park wherever they want (waaaay past the 15 meter off a RoW rule) because "they're walking dogs!!"... oh how silly of me |

Dog walkers go wherever they please, usually straight through woodland which they are specifically excluded from (as everyone is). Buildings are also out of bounds, but often used for barbecues, etc.
But by far the biggest problem at present is motorbikes, that are neither road legal nor ridden on rights of way. There are so few wardens and even less Police about that this is only likely to get worse. Every weekend we have to listen to wannabee motocrossers ranting across the Plain where we know there is no legal access, but as they evade the Police and Wardens when chased, it seems there's little that will change. The Police aren't even permitted to chase them, even in their 4x4s, and normal patrol cars which sometimes find their way up here can only manage walking pace. Even in the 5 short years i've been here we've seen civil and military activity increase significantly, and the fewer rights of way that are open, the more legitimate traffic is forced to use it. The routes then become more damaged and add justification to those who wish to exclude all civilian motorized access. I can see a day in the not so distant future that we will need a vehicle pass to drive on the Plain, and if it prevents unauthorized use I am in favour of it. Landmarc (who manage the Plain) are like any business, and are looking to maximise the revenue potential of the land, as they do with other users of the Plain. |
