2008 Defender 130 Puma 2.4 HCPU Chawton White
2.4 Puma on losing streak HELP
Hello mates, I come to you for help and guidance in this my toughest motoring year. My 130’s tough and reliable “attitude” has been interrupted this year (233k km), when I finally seemed to have everything sorted out, new issues appeared yesterday.
Overall issues throughout the year have been (already replaced):
Vacuum pump
Starter motor
Clutch kit
Slave cylinder & master cylinder
Clutch adaptor
Heater valve
Water pump
VCV
Alternator (serviced)
Battery (it lasted a long time, replaced the oem varta with lth red hitec)
Expansion tank (was still ok, replaced it for precaution)

The starter motor was what gave in first, right after I replaced it clutch and vacuum gave in, so it was parked in my garage for a few weeks (with the brand new starter motor and battery) so I started it everyday for a few minutes to keep things fresh meanwhile I waited for dhl delivery on parts.
After the parts arrived I took it to the shop where they replaced the clutch kit and vacuum pump. When I parked it there it was starting immediately.
When I went to pick it up, it had a hard time starting I had to insist several times to get it started but it got going so I drove home. The mechanic said probably they left a light on and the battery got low on juice.
Troubles persisted so I removed the alternator and took if for service, and also recharged the battery.
After re installing everything (the trouble starting pretty much felt as lack of electrical juice), the starter still has a difficult turn and didn’t start anymore after 2 or three troubled operations (last 2 times it worked did it at mot when they did a test on the booster, made a crushing noise had some burnt smell but then started perfectly for the last time, had good luck on that one) when I push the break pedal the park lights blink, the check engine light went on and there is now an unusual noise in the area of the injectors.
I have checked and re checked and triple checked the alternator, starter and battery connections and problems persist ( doesn’t start, check engine light is on, electrical weirdness on occasion everything is fine then lights go crazy) .
What else should I do? Any ideas why it was starting perfectly before clutch swap and doesn’t now, could there be a flaw in the installation?
I would very much appreciate the help with this one, my 130 is my workhorse (I’m a surveyor) and it’s pretty much the only rig that 100% meets my requirements.
Thanks in advance for the urgent help.
Cheers
Mack
PS. Dealer not an option, they just replaced their mechanics and the new guys know nothing about Defenders specifically pumas which are rare here.

And I've read the relays under the seat can come loose causing random dash lighting. Ray

i had one ring terminal that had broke the ring off of the terminal body,
It was only the insulation that held it together.

ABS light on,
TC randomly flickered
Tail lights not working
Occasional symptoms of a flat battery.
Heated Windows not working.

All of these would happen at random times, and in damp conditions it got worse,
I only found this after checking with a multimeter,
Visual inspection wasn't good enough.

Hope you get it sorted, I know how frustrating these problems can be,
I think most of us on here have had a visit from the "Lucas gremlin" at one time or another Laughing 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Hello mates thank you all for your replies. Both of the earth cables that go to the transmission were not even bolted on. After screwing them in place, the rig feels like new again 😁, what a headache for such a simple thing. Thanks again to you all, this forum is really helpful!
Cheers
