Scotland 2015 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Corris Grey
2.8 iveco engine
Just been scrolling through eBay and noticed someone selling a Santana ps10 engine and box adapter

Has anyone done this conversion ? Seams like it could be a cheap worth while conversion.

I've had a few iveco through out my time and they have been very good engines.

I think in a old 90 it would be lovely

The transit puma diesel is the best imo even further so the tddi puma of the mk6 transit where you can get the mechanical fuel pump and run off no electrics .

It just looks like this is a easy retro fit for for older 110 and 90 as a pose to the tdi and also cost didn't seam high

The TDDI was a pig, so many catastropic failures on those, and they were gutless compared to the TDCI version. By the time they got to the TDCI they'd been and sorted out most of the other faults with the engine too. There was a lot more development done on them beyond the fuel system. Much like a 2.2 is very different to to a 2.4.

The old Transit Di version of York engines were pretty bomb proof mind you, but noisy and rough by modern standards.

The 2.8 Iveco is a good lump, but it's probably easier to fit a 3.2 Puma engine if you're fitting to an existing Puma vehicle.

The way the UK is going with diesels, I wouldn't be swapping any diesel engine in! I've put plans to tune my td5 on hold until I decide if long term a petrol swap may be a better choice

I worked for an Iveco dealer for 13 years and did my apprenticeship when the 2.8 (8140 engine) was fitted to Daily vans.
They where a dependable unit and ran for many miles with no trouble as long as servicing was kept up.
But they were last produced in 2004/5, only 8 valve (albeit had lots of bottom end torque) so no were near as refined as a puma engine.
If i had a Tdi i would consider this as an option as in my view it is a better engine than a Tdi, but has electronics (unless you get the earlier 106hp variant with rotary fuel pump) and being early common rail injectors have been known to cause non start issues.
Overall they was a dependable engine to Iveco/Fiat like the Tdi was for Land Rover.

I've only ever had one failed puma and it was a 2.2 2009 170k engine the cam carrier snapped, I've had a Censored load of tddi and although a bit more unrefined they were all good the 125 ps had plenty power had one with 380k on it sweet as a nut , however the 75/90 and the 2.0 were so prone to fuel pump failing

They were forever blowing coolant hoses in our fleet and we had several with piston failures. awful rough old things, the older York based lumps were rough but at least they were robust.

Apart from the EGR the electronics on the TDCI pumas are very reliable. Even the bits that do fail, like the VCV and EGR, fail mechanically rather then electronically.

It would be a better option no dout however i was basing the swap on a landrover 90 where the comon swap is a 300tdi/200tdi

I really don't see any reason why it shouldn't work out to be a good transplant providing the engine you buy is in good repair.
These engines have a reasonable enough reputation in the Santana and at the time of their launch in the Santana were considered superior to the Tdi.
Old transit engines belong in old Transits, as do modern Transit engines, come to think of it 😆😉

i was going to fit one in a defender years ago, i remember going to Billing and speaking to frogs island as they were fitting the 2.5 iveco engine but when i said i was after the adapter plate etc the guy became very cagey and wouldn't say where they were getting them from, i think it was an iveco dealer in Southampton ? Anyway cut a long story short the Landy got nicked & i flogged the engine !
